Clinton, Obama Campaigns Said to Be Considering Network Ad Buys

Jan 18, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Facing the daunting task of reaching voters in more than 20 states that hold primaries on Super Tuesday, Feb. 5, Sen. Hillary Clinton’s and Sen. Barack Obama’s campaigns have started to examine purchasing network TV time.
An official at one of the major broadcast networks who asked not to be identified confirmed that media buyers for each campaign have contacted the network, but said no orders have yet been placed.
Officials of several other networks could not be immediately reached for comment and the campaigns did not return calls seeking comment.
Some political analysts had predicted last week that the unsettled nature of the races and the number of voters in some high-cost, big-state media markets could tilt the traditional economics of campaign media buying away from strictly local television and toward an overlay of national advertising. They had suggested candidates with adequate money could buttress targeted local spending with a national overlay on cable or on network TV.
There also has been some speculation that one or more of the candidates might try to buy time on some high-profile event such as the Super Bowl, something that so far hasn’t happened.
There was no indication whether any network buys would be significant or more last-minute, primary-eve purchases, if spots were bought at all.
GOP candidate Rudolph Giuliani early this year bought spots in consecutive weeks of “Fox News Sunday,” making his the first presidential spots to air on broadcast networks in at least 12 years. The Bush campaign ran national cable but no network TV ads in 2004.

  1. THAT MAKES SENSE . SENATOR CLINTON HAS MY VOTE. I WANT THE FUTURE OF MY LOVED ONES , THOSE YET TO COME AND MY , ON THE RIGHT PATH , AS THOSE OF ALL THE OTHERS IN THE US AND IN TURN THE WORLD . GOD BLESS.

  2. Yeah, I don’t ever think a candidate will buy the Super Bowl.
Unless, of course, it’s a GOP ad with a giant farting elephant or a Dem ad with a donkey doing something equally distasteful.
It would have to be something spectacular to drag my eyes away from the bowl of guacamole during commercial breaks.
Maybe Hillary could get one of those nipple-shields like Janet had a few years ago and have Bill expose right at the end of the spot.

  3. I agree with your thoughts here and I really love your blog! I’ve bookmarked it so that I can come back & read more in the future.
