Comcast to Shutter AZN in April

Jan 25, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Comcast is closing down its AZN Television network, which targeted Asian American viewers.
The cable giant said the channel failed to attract enough advertising and other revenue to make it economically viable.
“AZN Television’s last day of broadcasting will be April 9. This difficult decision was made after considerable review of the network’s financial situation,” Comcast said in a statement.
AZN had 13.9 million subscribers, mainly on Comcast systems. Comcast has no other plans for that distribution.
Staffing was minimal at the network, with about 15 people.
Since acquiring the network from Liberty Media in 2004, Comcast made several stabs at programming AZN, but nothing clicked. An outside consultant brought in to review the situation found that the best solution for Comcast was to shut the network.
One AZN program, “The Asian Excellence Awards,” will be televised this year by Comcast’s E! Entertainment Television.
Comcast said it will continue to make programming available to Asian subscribers through its international channels and its on-demand service.

  1. this really sucks!!! I enjoy AZN very much (in spite of their many, many commercials). I’m really going to miss this channel. I hope Comcast does justice in the ON Demand category to Asian programming. So far the offerings on ON Demand for pretty pitiful!
