E!, TV Guide Revamp Globes Coverage

Jan 9, 2008  •  Post A Comment

E! and TV Guide Network have altered their plans for coverage of the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday.
The award show was canceled because of the writers strike, and replaced by a news conference announcing the winners. With no actors showing up for the ceremony, the need for normal red-carpet coverage was eliminated.
E! will be offering live news cut-ins from E! News host Ryan Seacrest as the winners are announced on NBC. To replace its Globes coverage, the network is programming marathons of its original shows for Sunday , with “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” appearing from 4 to 8 p.m. ET and “Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood” appearing from 8 to 10 pm. A new episode of “The Girls Next Door” will appear at 10 p.m.
E is calling the stunt “Stay Home Sunday.”
The Globes coverage provides one of the highest-profile programming days for both E! and TV Guide Network, attracting premium ad rates. The new programming likely will attract lower ratings.
E! said its sales team “is working with advertisers to develop suitable make-good packages.”
When the Globes were canceled, NBC said it was giving back cash to some sponsors of the awards broadcast.
TV Guide Network plans to air two-hour news “Countdown to the Globes” from 7-9 p.m. ET, leading up to the announcement. It will be hosted by Chris Harrison, anchor of the network’s new entertainment news show “Hollywood 411,” and Maria Sansone.
After the awards are announced, TV Guide Network will have a one-hour recap show from 10 to 11 p.m. ET.
The network plans to have its red-carpet hosts Lisa Rinna and Joey Fatone back on the air for the SAG Awards on Jan. 27.
TV Guide Network will try to move advertisers interested in awards coverage to the SAG Awards and the Grammys, which will be given out in February.
