Most Bankable Stars: Oprah Winfrey

Last year’s ranking:1
After making Forbes magazine’s list of 2007’s top-paid television celebrities, taking in $260 million between June 2006 and June 2007, it’s easy to see why panelists dubbed the daytime icon “the most powerful person on TV.” Ms. Winfrey once again claims the crown of this year’s “Most Bankable.” “She is the bank,” said one expert.
Clearly her influence extends beyond daytime, with “Oprah’s Big Give” picked up by ABC, and national publicity for her active role in promoting Democratic candidate Sen. Barack Obama in the presidential race.
“What can we say? The most admired woman on television. She’s trying to get an invite to the inaugural balls next year,” said one participant. “Not just a talk show host but a cultural icon.
Oprah is not just selling books but now endorsing presidential candidates,” said another.
However, panelists point out potential rust on the crown if the one-person franchise isn’t careful.
“Even though she is still in her own category, her show was down double digits in November, which could be a sign of things to come,” said one panelist.
Indeed, her show, while still atop the talk-show charts, has shown a 16% decline in year-to-year ratings this season, earning a 5.8 average score this season compared to a 6.9 for the same period in 2006. That slide has placed spinoff “Dr. Phil” in position to overtake the reigning talk-show queen on a good week.
