Obama Campaign Launches TV Ads in New York

Barack Obama’s campaign is launching campaign ads in New York starting tomorrow, in a surprise turn in the race for the Feb. 5 Super Tuesday vote.
Campaign manager David Plouffe announced the ads today, saying details of the creative will be announced later in the day.
The estimated $750,000 buy includes news programming and some entertainment programming, including syndicated hits “Oprah,” “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy!”
The Obama campaign’s buy in the country’s most expensive market was unexpected, both because of the ads’ cost and because New York is home to rival Hillary Clinton.
However, the Obama campaign launched advertising in Connecticut last week and had indicated New Jersey was a priority. Viewers in parts of both New Jersey and Connecticut watch New York stations. Mr. Plouffe said the campaign will launch advertising in Philadelphia tomorrow and expand spending in Los Angeles.
Also, New York awards its delegates proportionately rather than on a winner-take-all basis.
The Clinton campaign late Tuesday did its own estimated $700,000 New York City media buy, its first of the campaign. The buy to air starting tomorrow was in the same kinds of dayparts and programming as the Obama buy.
Mr. Plouffe said winning in South Carolina had helped the Obama campaign to raise money; that cash is being spent on advertising for the Feb. 5 Super Tuesday states.
He said the campaign will have TV ads running in 16 of the 20-plus states, with radio running in 11 states.
