TargetVision Adds 2 Series

With the countdown to the National Association of Television Program Executives conference in full gear, independent distributor TargetVision has added two syndicated series, “Sports Stars of Tomorrow” and “Race Week,” to its 2008-09 season programming palette. They join a lineup that includes a reality series featuring Dallas Cowboys star Jason Witten.
“Sports Stars of Tomorrow,” the only high school sports program in national syndication, spotlights up-and-coming athletes set to enter the NCAA and professional ranks; it’s hosted by sportscasting legend Pat Summerall.
TargetVision will provide a multimedia package for local stations to get into or complement their existing high school sports business.
“Race Week” looks into the racing business.
Both series are relatively new to syndication but will bring in established audiences, having been previously distributed by producer GameDay Productions.
TargetVision is run by 40-year TV program sales, marketing and consulting veteran Phil Oldham. His resume includes a 10-year run as executive VP for Genesis/New World, where he successfully packaged such series as “The National Geographic Specials,” “Highway to Heaven,” “Real Stories of the Highway Patrol” and “Access Hollywood.”
Mr. Oldham’s acquisition of the two sports series from GameDay reflects opportunities in the marketplace for local stations to drive advertising from high-profile sports industries.
“High school sports have become big business, but stations have had trouble tapping into the market,” Mr. Oldham said. “With our leadership, we will be able to take these shows and put together an ad sales support package as well as a Web site component and sponsorship opportunities that reflect what stations are doing and what their needs are.”
Mr. Oldham will slightly rejigger the format, with episodes that look at how legends started in the business as well as episodes that look at key events taking place at the time in a particular sport.
“Consolidation has forced independent syndicators to provide outlets with more than just a show, which is why we are providing stations with turnkey and localization options as well as fully developed Web site components that integrate with the station’s own site,” he said, noting WABC-TV in New York had already utilized the integration strategy.
TargetVision has other series on deck at NATPE for the upcoming season, including “Holidays on Ice” as well as “The Wittens: An American Family,” a 20-week reality series focused on the lives of Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten and his wife, head nurse at one of the country’s busiest emergency rooms.
“Right now our goal is to make what we’re doing work,” Mr. Oldham said. “We have fine-tuned our lineup and we are working with station groups for a successful season.”
