Campaigns Spend $16 Million on Last-Minute TV Ads

The presidential candidates’ level of ad spending in Super Tuesday states may pale in comparison with the level of spending in Iowa and New Hampshire, but TV stations may have generated $16 million in last-minute ad buys during the campaign’s major weeklong blitz in the runup to Feb. 5.
Evan Tracey, chief operating officer of TNSI’s Campaign Media Analysis Group, said local cable also was a beneficiary, with up to $3.2 million spent. The campaigns of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John McCain and Mike Huckabee also made national cable buys; the Huckabee campaign bought one spot on the Fox broadcast network.
Most of the last-minute spending was by Democrats. The Obama campaign at week’s end was running ads not only in Feb. 5 states but in some states whose primaries come later. The Clinton campaign, meanwhile, was set to run an hourlong program Feb. 4 on the Hallmark Channel.
Mr. Tracey estimates that total spending in the 20-plus states set to vote Feb. 5 will exceed $20 million.
While attention continues to focus on the Feb. 5 primary states, the failure of candidates of either party to thus far lock up the nomination could bring unexpected bonanzas to states that follow. There are votes Feb. 9 in Washington, Louisiana and Nebraska, a vote Feb. 10 in Maine and a vote Feb. 12 in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia.
