Google Extends Video AdSense Network

Feb 20, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Google plans to extend the reach of its nascent Video AdSense network, which matches online video content with relevant ads, to several high-profile partner sites starting today, the company said in a blog post.
The AdSense for Video beta project, as Google calls it, extends the video overlays Google has used on YouTube for the last several months to additional sites in Google’s content network.
Video partners in the content network include BobVila.com, eHow, MyDamnChannel, ExpertVillage, PinkBike, TheNewsRoom, Revver, blip.tv and GodTube.
Google has linked up with several video technology firms and ad networks who will plug Google ads into their platforms and services. Among them are Brightcove, YuMe Networks, Tremor Media and Eyespot Network.
The new program effectively extends the capability of Google’s Video AdSense to a much deeper range of video Web sites, giving the world’s biggest search engine a stronger foothold in the growing online video advertising business to complement its dominance in online text ads.
Online video ad spending is expected to rise from $1.4 billion this year to $4.3 billion in 2011, according to eMarketer.
“This enables advertisers to run a single campaign across the largest network of online video content,” Google company wrote in its AdSense blog.
The new project will let Web sites offer text overlay ads that are contextually targeted to the videos and the Web site. Video ad targeting has been cited by experts as a key area of growth for the online video ad market, since it enables sites to pair relevant ads with like-minded content. Targeted advertising should help grow the online video ad market further.
“Being part of Google’s AdSense for Video beta provides our publishers with a powerful new avenue for realizing the full revenue potential of their video inventory,” Jayant Kadambi, CEO of YuMe Networks, said in a statement.
“Video and rich media continue to account for an increasingly large segment of online content—Brightcove customers alone reach 130 million unique users a month across thousands of Web sites,” Chris Johnston, director of ad product management at Brightcove, said in a statement.
Google’s new program poses hefty competition for other firms that offer video ad targeting, such as Blinkx and Digitalsmiths. However, some of these sites have relationships with various Google partners, such as Digitalsmiths and Tremor Media. It was not immediately clear how the competitors would be affected by the service.
