PBS Turns to ‘Old House’ Team for PSAs on Digital TV Transition

Feb 25, 2008  •  Post A Comment

It’s going to be “This Old DTV Conversion” at PBS next month.
PBS today announced it is enlisting “This Old House” host Kevin O’Connor and master carpenter Norm Abram for public service announcements explaining the DTV conversion, in both English and Spanish, to air in March.
The country’s full-power stations switch from an analog signal to a digital one on Feb. 17, 2009.
In a statement, PBS President-CEO Paula Kerger said the two seemed the perfect choice to explain the DTV conversion.
“Since they have been explaining how to get things done around the house for years, they are perfect for this initiative,” she said, adding that the PBS messages will offer consumers an “impartial and trusted source” of information to navigate their options.
The 30-second and 60-second messages are being produced for PBS stations and will be aired by the stations rather than in network programming.

  1. The country’s full-power stations switch from an analog signal to a digital one on Feb. 17, 2009.
I wish reporters would stop dumbing this stuff down. The stations aren’t switching from analog to digital on Feb. 17, 2009. They are shutting off their analog signal on Feb. 17, 2009. The digital signal is up now. They make it sound like the whole transition is taking place in one day.

  2. I was glad they said FULL POWER stations. Most stories including one on a major network, have said all TV stations are going digital in 2009. I saw one story that showed just noise and said, “this is all you’ll see on your TV after Feb. 2009” This is very confusing to the general public. Hopefully, PBS will do their homework and get the story across to the public in a way that it is easily understood and correct. Most people don’t understand the difference between DTV and HDTV. Too many people use the term HDTV when they mean DTV.
