Fox Sticking to Fall During May Upfront (Daily Variety)
News Corp.’s’ Fox Broadcasting, which has been carrying the 52-week programming banner for the past few seasons, said it won’t disclose its programming plans for next January and March at this May’s upfront presentation. It also blasted NBC’s plan announced earlier this week to present a full-year schedule as “cockamamie.” Fox Entertainment Chairman Peter Ligouri said the change gives the network time to develop some shows during the summer, Daily Variety reports. While the Writers Guild of America strike affected the decision, Fox, which will announce its fall lineup at the upfronts, may permanently refrain from announcing mid-season shows during the presentations, the newspaper says.
CBS Adds Reality Shows on Divorce, Crime (The Hollywood Reporter)
CBS will make pilots for two new reality shows, one featuring divorcing couples and another starring crime victims who are helped by law-enforcement officials to solve the cases, the Hollywood Reporter says. “Splitsville,” which involves couples who battle for their possessions through competitive challenges, will be executive produced by Jamie Kennedy, while the yet-to-be-named crime series will be created by “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” executive producer Tom Forman, the newspaper reports.
NBC May Split ‘Friday Night Lights’ With Other Networks (Daily Variety)
NBC Universal is in talks with the CW and other outlets including, E!, TNT and DirecTV about sharing broadcasts of the critically acclaimed series “Friday Night Lights,” Daily Variety reports. The arrangement could be similar to the current one in which “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” premieres on USA Network and airs later on NBC, the newspaper says.
‘SNL’ Really Live for Four Straight Weeks for First Time Since 1976 (New York Times)“Saturday Night Live” will produce new shows on four consecutive weeks for the first time since 1976 in order to partially make up for time lost by the Writers Guild of America strike, the New York Times reports, citing producer Lorne Michaels. Upcoming guest hosts include Ellen Page, Steve Carell and Shia LeBoeuf, the newspaper says.
Nickelodeon’s ‘OddBaby’ Has Year’s Biggest Audience for Kids Show (Daily Variety)
Nickelodeon’s Feb. 18 “Fairly OddBaby” premiere had the largest year-to-date audience for a children’s show, Daily Variety reports. “Fairly OddBaby,” a spinoff of Nickelodeon’s “The Fairly OddParents” series, averaged 8.8 million viewers, the newspaper says.
BET Networks Plan British Invasion (The Hollywood Reporter)
BET Networks will add a channel by the end of the month that will be available to about 8.8 million UK satellite-television viewers, the Hollywood Reporter says. The channel will include such BET shows as “106 & Park” and “Hell Date,” the newspaper reports.
Burnett Collaborator Goffin Signs with ‘Idol’ Producer Fremantle (Daily Variety)
David Goffin, who co-created the reality show “Rock Star” with “Survivor” producer Mark Burnett, signed an agreement to produce reality shows for “American Idol” producer FremantleMedia North America, Daily Variety reports. Goffin, a supervising producer of the first three seasons of “American Idol,” says he hopes to have the Internet play a larger role in the development of reality shows, the newspaper reports.
Google Extends Video AdSense Network (TV Week)
Google is adding several high-profile partner sites to its Video AdSense network, which matches online video content with relevant ads. With online video ad spending expected to rise to $4.3 billion by 2011, the expansion of AdSense allows campaigns to reach across the largest collection of online video content, the company said.
