Wal-Mart Backs Blu-ray

Retail giant Wal-Mart announced today it is backing Sony’s Blu-ray format for high-definition DVDs, a possibly fatal blow to Toshiba’s rival HD DVD format.
A gradual phasing out of HD DVD products will occur at Wal-Mart and Sam’s Clubs across the country, with HD DVD products off Wal-Mart shelves by June.
“We’ve listened to our customers, who are showing a clear preference toward Blu-ray products and movies with their purchases,” said Gary Severson, senior VP, Wal-Mart U.S. home entertainment.
It’s another devastating blow to the beleaguered HD DVD format, as movie rental giant Netflix pledged Blu-ray allegiance earlier in the week, as did Blockbuster in mid-2007. Best Buy also announced last week it’s going with Blu-ray.
