Tribune Merges Operations at Florida Station, Newspaper
Tribune Co. will combine the broadcast and interactive operations of WSFL-TV, its CW affiliate in Miami, and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, its newspaper based in Fort Lauderdale. The move, announced Wednesday, is being made to utilize the Sun-Sentinel as an on-air and online “content engine” for the TV station; to increase choices and efficiencies for advertisers; and to foster cross-promotional activities. WSFL will move into existing Sun-Sentinel space.
“This gives our print, broadcast and interactive operations the opportunity to work together to develop unique content and programming in a variety of areas. Plus, with this combination, there will be no better way for advertisers to reach more people with a consistent message,” Sun-Sentinel President-Publisher Howard Greenberg said in the announcement.
“This [synergistic] approach makes great sense for consumers and advertisers in South Florida,” said Ed Wilson, Tribune Broadcasting’s recently named president, in the announcement.
Mr. Greenberg, who also is interim publisher of Tribune’s Orlando Sentinel, will become general manager of WSFL. Allyson Meyers is returning to WSFL as station manager after one year as general manager of WCWJ-TV in Jacksonville, Fla. Ms. Meyers was general sales manager at WSFL from 2004 to 2007.

HD DVD Mess Forces Toshiba Forecast Lower
Toshiba Corp. last week said fiscal 2007 earnings will be 31% less than previously forecast because of the discontinuation of its HD DVD next-generation disc-player format. Earnings for the year ending March 31 will be 125 billion yen ($1.26 billion), less than the 180 billion yen it forecast in October, the company said in a statement. Revenue will be 7.7 trillion yen, down 1.3% from its forecast. Toshiba’s operating loss on HD DVD for fiscal 2007 will be 65 billion yen, wider than both the 50 billion yen forecasted and the 34 billion yen loss Toshiba took in fiscal 2006. HD DVD sales will be 26 billion yen, down 60% from its October forecast. n
