Candidates’ Media Stance: Sen. Barack Obama

Mar 23, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Illinois Sen. Barack Obama hasn’t been in Congress as long as his rivals in the race for the White House, but he has stepped into some media issues that illuminate how he might govern the industry should he succeed in his bid for the presidency.
Mr. Obama has joined with Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry to question how media consolidation could affect minority media ownership. He also has suggested TV is responsible for the “coarsening of our culture.”
Some of Mr. Obama’s criticism is of Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin J. Martin, whom Mr. Obama has known since both attended Harvard University Law School. Mr. Martin and Mr. Obama occasionally played basketball together in college.
Of the three presidential candidates, Mr. Obama is the only one to prominently showcase media issues on his campaign Web site. Perhaps in a sign of the importance he places on the issue, the Web site lists detailed positions on a number of media issues. The Obama campaign didn’t return calls seeking comment by press time.
Media Ownership
Sen. Obama wasn’t in Congress in 2003, when the Senate voted to stymie the FCC’s last attempt to ease media ownership rules, but he has spoken out against relaxing the rules. He and Mr. Kerry sent Mr. Martin several letters unsuccessfully urging the FCC to delay action.
Mr. Obama argued the FCC was acting without fully understanding the impact consolidation could have in reducing ownership of broadcast stations by minorities. He also has been concerned about media consolidation’s impact on local programming.
“Barack Obama believes that the nation’s rules ensuring diversity of media ownership are critical to the public interest,” according to his campaign Web site. “Unfortunately … the [FCC] has promoted the concept of consolidation over diversity. Barack Obama believes that providing opportunities for minority-owned businesses to own radio and television stations is fundamental to creating the diverse media environment that federal law requires and the country deserves and demands.”
The Web site also says the candidate will “promote the development of new media outlets for expression of diverse viewpoints, and clarify the public-interest obligations of broadcasters. An Obama presidency will promote greater coverage of local issues and better responsiveness by broadcasters to the communities they serve.”
Indecency
Sen. Obama has attacked lowbrow TV content, but questioned whether going after indecency violations is the right approach.
“Mass media is contributing to an overall coarsening of our culture,” he said in a November 2005 speech to the Kaiser Family Foundation.
In that same speech, he said the number of media choices available, as well as First Amendment questions, leave doubts that direct regulation of indecency is the answer.
“We know that with the pervasiveness of mass media today—the existence of so many means of communication—it’s very difficult to regulate our way out of this problem,” he said. “And for those of us who value our First Amendment freedoms—who value artistic expression—we wouldn’t want to.”
Instead, he suggested the government should focus on getting broadcasters to act on their public-interest obligations.
“The content of [children’s] viewing is not enriching their minds, but numbing them; not broadening intellectual curiosity or appreciation for the arts, but trivializing the important and desensitizing us to the tragic.
“We need to make it clear [to broadcasters] that there are larger civic obligations to the public … obligations to reflect not the basest elements of American culture, but the profound and proud.”
Mr. Obama has subsequently taken similar stances, and on his campaign’s Web site suggested that providing more tools for parents and a better ratings system are better answers.
“Mr. Obama will work to give parents the tools to prevent reception of programming that they find offensive on television and on digital media … [to] encourage improvements to the existing voluntary rating system, exploiting new technologies like tagging and filtering, so that parents can better understand what content their children will see and have the tools to respond.”
Internet
Mr. Obama not only calls for the FCC to ban Internet providers from giving one content provider a favored path to consumers’ computers—so-called “net neutrality”—but he wants the government to take a far more active role in boosting the Web’s speed and availability.
“America should lead the world in broadband penetration and Internet access,” his campaign Web site says.
Among the changes proposed: Redefine broadband as a far faster speed than the FCC has used, and improve use of wireless spectrum and promotion of next-generation speeds through tax and loan incentives. Mr. Obama has expressed some concerns that the U.S. is falling behind other countries and that poor and rural people could be left as lesser citizens if the government doesn’t step it.
Net neutrality had drawn a veto threat from the Bush White House.
Drug Advertising
Among Sen. Obama’s key supporters is Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, who has pushed to give the Food & Drug Administration the power to ban direct-to-consumer drug ads in their first three years. Sen. Kennedy could have a far more receptive president in Mr. Obama, but the legislation’s fate in Congress is difficult to predict.

  1. i am really ashamed of the cnn nes media using its power to try to spread hate more to one than the other. they seem to want to out talk the guess . hate is beening spread thu the media. they can reach the people. if i hear wrights name one more time he must be right.

  2. i only sent one.

  3. This is the kind of information that should be put forth by the Media when reporting on the run for the nomination for U.S President. This stance on media neutrality along with the promotion of diversity in the media and the improvement of the quality of media choices are fine examples, concrete examples, of how one candidate, at least, is acting FOR the people in this country whose government is professed to be “OF the people, BY the people and FOR the people. Let’s see it and hear it on our major news channels. This is REAL news!

  4. what people thats the? you know we can alwaya jusity when it suits our will. it is not helping the people when we see a narrow view.

  5. it is BULL i am sorry mary you must be one of those be one of those who needs are feed . this did not come out the mouth of OBAMA. and i dont think he or anyone has to brow down to unfair press. thats problem we all like it are not are equal.

  7. rosemccovery: Obama is correct on what changes need to be make!!
I also suggest that if you want people to take your comments serious. LEARN HOW TO WRITE A COHERENT UNFRARMENTATED SENTENCE AND SPELL IT CORRECTLY!!!

  8. sorry jim the computer did not spell to your liking. i am up in age, just learning i hope not to brother you so much. sorry for using my computer.

  9. If you JIM got a good education good for you.

  10. I am with Obama/ America needs a fundamental change over/ and let us not vorget that the US was brought to its knees by experianced politiciance.

  11. good for you gerigio . but be carefull jim might be after you next some wrong spelling he is educated.

  12. to sad to see you rosemccovery as a opponent of progress if you like it or not he is (obama) going to make a good president afterall clinton had her eight years of manipulating figures we need a fresh breez this is not a family honor (from husband to wife and later to daughter and cousines etc…..) we a need a something new.

  13. kimberin wher are you at i campained for OBAMA i know i dont write that bad i been OBAMA ALL THE WAY ARE YOU DRINKING. use your head read read my commenta again.i never siad i was anything but BArka. i know more about OBAMA than a lots of people ever will.

  14. The wind of change is blowing across America the table has change it,s time for a new taste and value.colour of the skin does not required for a good president.I,m white America, presidency is not a rotational basis. It,s not husband to wife issue or a matter of good lobbing.Let face the reality, Obama is more qualified and better than her raval.

  15. We should judge a person by their actions and not their words.
The fact that Obama choose Mr. Wright as his spiritual teacher for 20 years and included Mr. Wright in his election staff speaks well for Mr. Obama’s thinking and actions. Words are easy to manipulate and it is UNLIKELY that Obama’s recent speech was written by Mr. Obama anyway. Mr. Obama has a powerful and power hungry staff including his wife that will do or say anything to get him elected to power.
But clearly this man Mr. Obama is not to be trusted with the future of our great country. And regardless that he is ‘fashionably black’ and that many of you have some desire to prove to yourself or to others that you are not prejudice and that you like ‘black people’ with an attitude of ‘See, I like black people, I’m voting for a black person,’ such an attitude of voting for a person because of their race is the definition of prejudice.
If Mr. Obama had a lighter skin tone, there is no way he would be tolerated in as much he is aligned with a violent religious group, and never says anything substantial. And not only that, consider today’s announcement that the Chief of the firm involved in the State Department’s passport breach is Obama adviser. And that Obama has been caught lying about Rezko, regarding the amount of money Rezko gave him, and he still hasn’t come clean about his Rezko land deal.
Just look at the kind of people Mr. Obama associates with. If Obama were to become president, what would stop Mr. Obama from appointing Mr. Wright to his cabinet? And if anyone complained about Mr. Wright’s appointment, no doubt they would be called racist, as this card is played daily by Mr. Obama and his clever campaign staff.
Mr. Obama is partly running on ‘a premise of guilt’ that if you don’t vote for him, it is because you don’t like his race. A manipulative premise that is certain to have disastrous consequences for America and the world, for we should have as our country’s leader someone with wisdom and knowledge regardless of race, not someone hungry for power.
Out of all the 300 million people in America, is this really who you want for president?

  16. pretty speach . i don’t vote on race. but whites are ollowed to fu’ up and do anything. look what has happen look at the county. have the clintons changed. wake up and smell the coffee. i hope he dont need your vote.

  17. I GUESS THE GUY ‘OLANDUG’ IS ONE OF THOSE WHITES WHO DOES NOT WANT OBAMA TO BE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT.WELL,HE SHOULD UNDERSTANT CLEARLY THAT OBAMA WOULD PRESIDENT WHILE HE IS ALIVE BUT NOT DEAD

  18. I DID NOT TO GO TO WHITE AND BLACK BECAUSE WHITES HAS BEEN BETTER TOO ME THAN MY PEOPLE. BUT I DONT LIKE THE THINGS. THAT I HAVE HEARD. DO YOU THINK OBAMA WOULD NOT BE A PRESIDENT FOR ALL. IDONT HOLD HIM, FOR THE SPEECH REV. WRIGHT DID. BECAUSE THE DAY FOR BROWING DOWN IS OVER. I HAVE HEARD WORST. BUT AGAIN IT GOES TO WHO IT IS COMING FROM. BLACKS HAS TO DEAL WITH MUCH MORE. BE REAL I KNOW WHO I AM.

  19. The controversy surrounding the sermons of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama’s former preacher is an attempt by those who oppose racial harmony to split the growing multiracial support of his presidential candidacy. And Olanbug you seem to me, to be one of those type of people! Pridgen said in the “Buffalo News” “the controversy is only a distraction in order to drive a wedge between people who have finally come together” behind Obama, who had a white mother and a black father. When have you ever seen so many black people, white people, Asian people, Christian people [and] Muslim people get together behind one person? I don’t agree with all the fiery words of Wright, but I understood where he was referencing from and that I respect Wright for speaking about what HE (Freedom of Speech which is his given right) considers wrong with America.
“Anybody who pretends that America is well and does not need healing is either a liar or has never been to SE Washington, DC, any of the inter-cities of America and those of us hidden quietly suffering in the “burbs” while we pretend we didn’t hear that or see that! What I do know is I was never taught what the pastor spoke of by my parents, the pastors, teachers, or the likes, I got and get first hand exposure, when I go to the restaurants and I’m directed to the table closes to the kitchen when there is clearly vacant seats up front, when I go shopping the clerks watch me like a common criminal, when I was getting my Phd. and I was hated for no good reason (but I knew it was because of my skin color), when I go for a professional job and is told I don’t have enough of what they are looking for and then you turn around and a white person gets it–who clearly do not have half the experience/qualifications/edu. I have! If you do your homework you will find that it has been less than 1% of Blacks in upper government(Congress/Representatives-Secretary of Cabinets) and less than 3% of minorities. If you read the Bible you will also find that God speaks of a people that oppress a people WILL BE PUNISHED! It’s nothing anyone can do in that case, but speak against and as Nineveh did !!CHANGE!! And Mr. Obama is able to take the challenge and take the band aides off and start the dialog that is needed so we as America can heal and win this battle of recession, oppression, and depression. I’ve been in a lot of different countries and in most of the world they DO NOT like American especially “White Americans.” DO YOU EVER ASK YOURSELF OR WONDER WHY?!!!! Stop coming up with your own preconceived notions and get with what the U.S. Constitution/Amendments are really about! You need to think about it!

  20. YOU GO LINDA PEOPLE ARE IN DENIAL THATS WHY WE CANNOT MOVE FORWARD.

  21. what linda wrote is “right on the money” he (Obama) can not be denied….stop the hate now ..america needs to heal after all we have been thru… we can take back out country..think about it… Born Again Americans!!

  22. The issue at hand in the race for the presidency should not have to be about race or sex. Either way women and blacks are making history in this election! I support Barack Obama because he is not as corrupt as his opponent. Anyone supporting Hillary is in denial of the corruption that comes with the Clinton name. I was once a Clinton supporter myself but I have seen through some of the lies and am tired of politicians who are in deep with lobbyists. We need someone in the white house who isn’t afraid to go against the lobbyists and doesn’t owe so many favors. THAT is why Barack Obama is the only electable candidate running for office.

  23. Oh and by the way, Obamas more perfect union speech was written by none other than Barack.

  24. Olandug, I’m sorry but I can’t help but be a little disturbed by your assumption that Obama is only trying to acquire “power”. I mean we are talking about the highest office in the United States of America you know, Isn’t every presidential candidate essentially running to acquire the power of being President? I don’t think he’s running to acquire the power you speak of but he
is looking to gain power. Senator McCain, Senator Clinton are looking for power too. Now I don’t believe Mr. Obama is looking for the evil, I’m going to take over the world Lex Luthor arch nemesis of Superman kind of power, but yeah power nonetheless. A man ………or woman can do alot with the prefix of President before their name. But if you’re looking for someone who may commit an evil deed or two with that power, you need look no further than our current Mr. President Bush. Never have I seen a leader of a nation with such a personal agenda or a disregard/disrespect for the people who cast their vote for him.
A war which was pretty much a continuation of his oil tycoon fathers war. Terrifying revelations of weapons of mass destruction. (all lies) Nothing more than an excuse to advance his families business with the oil shieks of the middle east. We have had more Generals and Admirals of the Military retire before contract expirations since Vietnam because their commander in chief wanted to hear nothing they had to say. I’m afraid a vote for anyone but Barack Obama is folley. Hillary Clinton won’t beat McCain and I think Barack has a good chance of winning, well, a better chance than Hillary anyway. If anyone is even contemplating voting for McCain I must ask what in the world are you thinking? That’s nothing more than voting Bush into office for another 4 years at least. Wake up please America.

  25. Listening to Obama’s speech last week It did not ease my concerns of Anti-Americanism about the senator. “It is hard to accept that a major candidate like Obama did not distance himself from Pastor Wright sooner, and even made him his inspirational leader and mentor. This has raised a question as to his tolerance or intolerance of unacceptable, divisive speech and behavior on the part of the pastor and other influential community members.”He has stood by this Anti-American for Twenty Years!
Since Obama was familiar with his pastor’s strong positions, why he included him on his campaign committee. I have an element of discomfort with Barack Obama that was not eased by his speech.”
I will not be voting for Obama, I just can’t!
He will bring our country dispair!

  26. Hello Olandug,
Your question to the 300 million people in America – if we want the president like OBAMA is – YES, YES, YES. We all want a change. Asians in American want a change, Hispanics want a change, African Americans wants a change, European Amercians want a change, the Red Indians want a change. That’s why we are voting for OBAMA not because of his color nor race. So if you too want a change – then, join us for OBAMA.
The Bible says “TO MUCH LEARNING WEARIES THE BODY (Ecclesiastes 12:12b)”. You can see that weariness already in Clinton as also in George Bush. It is too much experience that brought America to her knees. And we all are now partaking in it as something call – economic mayhem. Now we need a president that will be sincere to face all Americans problem that will transcend the boarders of race nor creed. You can see that in OBAMA’S recent address on race. God bless American.

  27. antiamerican thats a laugh.the county has went to hell in a handbag. the rev. is not his way of thinking. we have listrn to bull shit for years. what are you really affraid of.

  28. Dear voteResponsibly08,
I hope you are not among those who kills the innocent with the wicked? —- Try to differenciate.
I have something against Wright not Obama. Even though Wright maybe right in some of his speech but I’m completely against his statement that says “American chickens are coming home for roost” as regards to 9/11. But let’s face the truth as Christians – what our white fathers and mothers did to the Blacks in the time past is equivelent to what Adolfors Hitlar did to the One million Jews in the hollocust. If God rise up today to judge their blood upon our heads it will be too awful.
The best thing for us to do now is to pretend that it never happend and embrace the message of unity and hope for all Americans.
I bet you my beloved fellow American, This issue of the past can not be quashed. Mostly now that the current McCain campaign team has flair this in the air with the intension to mere Obama’s momentum not knowing that they are re-voking the past memory of evil done to a particular race in America to the younger generation – This type of thing can not help, but tear America down. More-so, now that America has gotten a lot of enemies outside. If we still allow ourselves to be enemies to one another inside America because of race and creed, I bet you, in no short time we all will face hell, both from outside and within. We the young generation have seen this – and the only option now is for us to vote a man who is in between the races – a white and also a black. This goes down to OBAMA. His mother is our sister and his father is a black. For him becoming the president will help ease the tension both within and outside America. More-so, nobody who listens to his speech on race, if sincere will doubt his ability to be a president. Most of the America presidents who did well in their time in office are majorly those said to have less experince before they’re voted into the office. JF Kennedy, W.Clinto – B.Obama – To Be USP. While the worst presidents we have ever had are those majorly believed are experienced gurus.
Don’t be myopic. Try to see afar. If McCain groups were intelligent they wouldn’t have flair such thing, knowing truly the cause or the source of Wrights anger. Or as if some of the things he said didn’t happen. This is equivalent of trying to castigate a Jew when he angrily talk about the hollocust.
We need to grow up and think front and back, and consider the consequences of things we air in the media in the name of politics before we hurt our belove nation by ourselves. God bless America.

  29. How many times are people going to drag Obama into the mud with his angry minister. I guess we can all drag Hillary down for what her husband did when he was in the oval office and then blatantly lied about it to every American breathing. Have we forgotten about that? “I did not have sexual relations with that woman!”. See we Obama supporters can play the reflected blame game as well. Voteresponsibly08 ironic name too by the way. I have friends who support John McCain, does that make me a republican? I have friends who support Hillary too, does that make me a Democrat? I am a registered independent voter who sees the best candidate in Barack Obama. We’ll just have to agree to disagree I guess. Ah the beauty of democracy. Barack Obama has a friend who married he and his wife, baptised his two daughters and continues to hold and enormous amount of bitterness in his heart for the injustices of racial inequalities of the past. According to you, that makes Obama bitter as well. Sorry but I don’t see it that way. Mr. Obama is alot of things, however; I refuse to put bitter or “unamerican” on that list.

  30. Dickson had said it all. I must commend you for that great speech. Nobody should blame Mr. Wright for venting out his anger. In fact he should even be commended for having the initiative of throwing back the stone.Barack Obama is a bridge of peace among all the bitter parties (white&black, Christians & Muslims. You see there is a measure of Grace for you to stand against your enemy. There is also a greater measure of Grace to defeat your enemy arms down but there is also a far greater measure of Grace for love and peace to spring out of the heart of your enemy towards you. The Republicans campaign are selfish and self-centered. They deceive the whole world about going after a weapon of mass destruction but their intentions was in the wealth of the Iraqis. President Bush is the rudest terrorist of our time and very soon, his family will pay dearly for the lives of more than 4000 American soldiers & innocent Iraqis killed in battle. Anybody that votes for Republicans again is an enemy of peace.Thanks. God bless America

  31. You see i think that the democrats are dividing their votes. There is wisdom in concentrating what you people have into one. can’t you see what the republicans are doing? It would be better for the democrats if ‘her excellency’ Hillary Clinton bury her pride and ego and BEG Barack Obama for the position of Vice instead of trying to win a battle that she has already lost. Is it not glaring enough that she is no match to the intelligence being displayed by her ‘rival’ if you say that he is not as experienced as you are, remember that amateurs built the Ark while professionals built the Titanic.

  32. Listen everyone, and face it. We all all friends, associates, relatives even parents who have some strange beliefs particularly when it coms to politics, race or religion. How many of your golfing friends show their minds. Do you walk off the course and refuse to play anymore. It’s not a black or white issue. IT’SYOU . Let’s not be a hippocrit. “If you live in a glass house don’t throw stones.” Judge not a (wo/man) by what others do, rather judge by what (s/he) does. All three candidates have issues. None of them agrees exactly like I do. As of now, Obama is the best of them for ME.

  33. Now if McCain selected C Powell as running mate. I May consider voting republican. I believe that Powell has the influence, experience and diplomatic wherewithall to bring this war to a quick end victoriously.

  34. I do not care why my ancesters came to America or how, I don’t care if they were slaves, settlers or anything else, I am just glad to be an American, not a Irish American not a Black American nor any other, just an American. If we want to right the wrongs of the past we should all get in a boat, to be dropped off around the world and give the Indian people back this WONDERFULL country. Most of us would not like to live where our great grand parent’s came from so give America a break! Are we perfict? no, are we trying? Yes we are!

  35. Barack Obama did not inject race into this election. The fact is that while we have come a long way with racial divides, we still have a long way to go. So when this intelligent visionary, Barack Obama, decided to run for the Presidency and he spoke of true change, some American’s could not handle it. SOME people use the fact that he is Black to somehow think they can hender his chances. The United States have many prosperous Americans of all races.
“Together ordinary people can extraordinary things because we are not a collection of Red States and Blue States, we are the United States of America;” (Words by Senator Barack Obama)

  36. Correction:
“Together ordinary people can do extraordinary things because we are not a collection of Red States and Blue States, we are the United States of America;” (Words by Senator Barack Obama)

  37. Senator obama is indeed the best person to unite this “disunited” state. Wake up people, The name is UNITED STATE OF AMERICA if only we can all face change with bravery and less uncertainty. Obama can be trusted to take America to the place of high pedesral once again. America is great! But greatness without respect and trust is the least of what is desired. Obama can bring both respect and trust required to lead the world and generate a momentum for economice recovery.

  38. There is a place for a tight contest however negative it may seem sometimes. it will definitely produce the best candidate who currently has more delegates and and has proven to be more popular. The will of the democrats and indeed the will of the people should not be undermined by the highly respected and responsible Super deligates. At the end of the convention, Senator Obama will emerge and the entire democrats will rally around him and cement a process of healing and face the republicans who screwed up the U.S. economy. The experience of Senator Clinton will come handy. Obama and Clinton are buddies now and after he (Obama) has gained the nomination. These are seasoned politicians who protect their interest. The utmost interest of both Senator Obama and Senator Clinton is to usher in the wind of change that can only come from the best democratic presidential candidate. All Americans shall stand up for change and progress. The mometum is here again.

  39. Senator Barack is a true candidate of change.
Let us remember that some people are going to be negative. Many are trying to inject FEAR into our hearts and minds. I supported Senator Clinton in the beginning and I was following the campaign trails of all the candidates. The candidate that stood out from the rest was Senator Obama. He speaks and listens to people. We have not had a Presidential or Vice President in so long that relates to people. (George Bush/Dick Cheney are examples of diconnect)
Barack’s concerns and plans for the war, health care, economy, college and I can go on and on are concerns for all of us.
Now, we need to stop bickering among ourselves.
Let’s refuel and get Barack Obama elected.
Some anchors of Fox News Barack can not win, I, we say “Yes We Can”.
    Renee’ SC

  40. fox news hannity . you are unheard of you can’t hurt what GOD has for us. most of us dont have cable or the internet in the poor areas. so crop on you fool obama will prevail.

  41. HEY YOU GUYS,
IS IT TRUE THAT THERE IS A NEWS VIDEO TAPE OUT ABOUT OBAMA PREACHING IN PASTOR WRIGHT’S CHURCH ABOUT RACIST, TURNING THE WORDS IN THE BIBLE TO FIT HIS RACIST MEANING?

  42. Washington Redskins jerseys is very beautiful.

  43. You are such an amazing writer. Wishing you a strength and peace that surpasses all understanding as you continue to walk the high road … you are amazing, and I honor you for being YOU! 44. Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

  45. Neat blog layout! Very easy on the eyes.. i like the colors you picked out

  46. Love the blog here. Nice colors. I am definitely staying tuned to this one. Hope to see more.

  47. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
