New Satellite Boosts Dish’s HD Capacity; Cox HD Channels Also Rising
Dish Networks plans to launch a satellite this week that will allow the company to boost its high-definition channel count to as many as 100 by the end of the year, Web site TVPredictions.com reports. ABC Family, IFC and Nickelodeon are among the channels Dish will add in HD, the Web site said, citing an interview with company chief Charlie Ergen that was broadcast on Dish. Cox Communications also said it would boost the number of HD channels it offers. The closely held cable operator estimated it will have 80 HD channels by the end of the year, TVPredictions.com reports.

Sony’s Blu-ray victory over Toshiba’s HD DVD in the next-generation DVD format war is likely to boost sales of the company’s PlayStation 3 game console, which had lagged behind sales of Microsoft Xbox and Nintendo Wii, the Wall Street Journal reports. PlayStation is expected to be profitable next year as costs fall from component makers ramping up production, the Journal says.
Food Network, HGTV to Be Simulcast in HD This Month
Food Network and HGTV broadcasts will start HD simulcasts March 31, owner Scripps Networks said this week. Simulcast agreements are in place for “every major affiliate,” said Scripps Senior VP of Affiliate Sales Hal Rosenberg, who estimated the channels’ distribution at more than 25 million households.
HDNet Gets Headliner Awards for Films on Uganda, Philippines
HDNet’s “World Report” news program received two first-place nods at the 74th annual National Headliner Awards. One award was for a documentary about the Philippines’ military fighting Islamic extremists in the country’s jungles while the other was for a film about Ugandan children kidnapped to fight as mercenaries.
