Toshiba Chief Says HD DVD Intro Market ‘Weaker’ Than Standard Player Market
Toshiba Chief Executive Atsutoshi Nishida said the market for high-definition DVD players is “much weaker” than the standard DVD player market at its introduction, the Wall Street Journal reports. Toshiba, which will continue to make standard-definition DVD players, would have had about 25% of the next-generation disc market share had it continued to compete against Sony’s Blu-ray format, the Journal says, citing Nishida.
Pioneer May Stop Making Plasma Panels to Cut Losses
Pioneer may stop making plasma-television panels in an effort to cut losses from its flat-panel TV operations, Reuters says, citing an industry executive it didn’t identify. Pioneer, the world’s fifth-largest plasma TV maker, would buy panels from Matsushita, the wire service reports, citing the Nikkei business daily.
Best Buy Will Credit DirecTV Subscribers Who Buy HDTVs
Best Buy will credit DirecTV subscribers who buy high-definition televisions from the electronics retailer as much as $360 over the course of a year, the company says. Subscribers who pay more than $999 for an HDTV from Best Buy by June 24 will get a $30 monthly credit on their DirecTV bill for 12 months. Buyers of HDTVs cheaper than $999 will get the $30 monthly credit for six months, Best Buy says.
Verizon FiOS Customers Still Awaiting HDTVs
Verizon FiOS customers who are owed Sharp high-definition televisions as part of a promotion for the Internet television service will have to wait as long as 20 weeks, or five weeks longer than promised, for their TVs because of a supply shortage, the Wall Street Journal reports. Verizon, which had almost 1 million FiOS subscribers at the end of last year, offered the choice of a Magnavox TV or a $200 Best Buy gift certificate in exchange for the Sharp TV, the Journal says.
PBS, Trade Group Want FCC to Force Dish to Carry Local Channels in HD
PBS and a public-television trade group this week urged the Federal Communications Commission to force satellite-TV service Dish to carry PBS’ local channels in high definition, engadgetHD.com reports. PBS and the Association for Public Television Stations said in a letter to the FCC that Dish carries noncommercial channels in HD in only two of its 33 markets that have an HD package. PBS has a carriage deal with DirecTV, the Web said, adding Dish has not been not willing to negotiate carriage with PBS.
DirecTV to Air South by Southwest Concerts in HD
U.S. satellite-TV leader DirecTV will broadcast 24 shows in high definition from the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, between March 13 and March 15, the company says. X, Daryl Hall and the Lemonheads are among performers appearing at the Austin Convention Center that will be broadcast on DirecTV’s The 101 channel.

Thank God we have been a nation that isolates the church and state; it is time we as Us citizens just say to Ahmadinejad to go to hell.
