Sykes Exits MTV Networks

Longtime MTV Networks executive John Sykes, who helped launch MTV and VH1, is leaving the company.
Most recently, Mr. Sykes was president of network development at MTV Networks. It appears the company does not plan to go forward with this department’s projects, which were new multiplatform concepts aimed at underserved audiences.
“Many have left their indelible mark on MTV Networks over the years, but John’s creative leadership, bold thinking and social responsibility—not to mention the world’s greatest A-list relationships—truly shaped our company,” MTV Networks CEO Judy McGrath said in an internal e-mail to staff. “John isn’t just in tune with popular culture— he isn’t satisfied unless he is defining it.”
After helping to launch MTV 25 years ago, Mr. Sykes was president of VH1 from 1994 to 2002, serving up “Behind the Music” and creating the Save the Music Foundation, which raises money for instruments for schools.
He moved to Infinity Broadcasting, then Viacom’s radio division, now CBS Radio.
He returned to MTV Networks in his present post in 2005.
