Democrats Cancel North Carolina Debate

Apr 21, 2008  •  Post A Comment

The North Carolina Democratic Party is abandoning its planned April 27 debate, which would have been on CBS and moderated by Katie Couric.
Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., had accepted the party’s debate invitation, but Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., had not.
The debate’s airing before the state’s May 6 primary would have been a welcome boost to Ms. Couric amidst reports that she could be leaving “The CBS Evening News.”
Instead, it marks a second missed chance for her to moderate a debate of the Democratic candidates. Ms. Couric had been slated to moderate a debate in December that ended up being canceled because Democrats were unwilling to cross striking writers’ picket lines.
The North Carolina party’s announcement today said the event was canceled “due to time constraints and logistical issues associated with such a large, national event.”
