Apr 17, 2008  •  Post A Comment

NBC Universal became the latest big media company to create a digital studio with the announcement today that it has formed a unit to develop and produce digital content for NBCU’s broadcast and cable networks.
The group will create original episodic programming as well as interactive experiences for existing NBCU brands.
NBCU said Omnicom Media Group Digital is on board as a strategic partner.
The digital studio already has a handful of projects on deck, including “Gemini Division,” slated to premiere online this summer. Cameron Death serves as VP of NBC Universal Digital Studio.
ABC also recently created its own digital studio, while Warner Bros. launched one last year.

  1. Color me confused . . . but wasn’t the whole reason NBC Universal Television Studios renamed itself into Universal Media Studios so that they could expand beyond just a television production studio (i.e. digital content production and distrubution)?
Guess not according to this announcement. They basically renamed themselves because they didn’t want to be abbreviated NUTS by news magazines such as Variety, Hollywood Reporter, and, of course, TV Week.

  2. Thurston, I completely agree. When I saw this headline I thought, “wait, isn’t that why they changed to Universal Media Studios?” So now they have NBC U Digital Studio, NBC U Cable Studio, and Universal Media Studios (which seems to really only produce television)? It seems strange, and maybe they need to rethink their branding?
