The Talent Wars Have Started

Apr 14, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Guess what the big topic of conversation in my house this weekend was?
C’mon. Try.
That’s right. My husband and I were all atwitter over the news that Veronica Belmont would be leaving Web show “Mahalo Daily.”
I’m serious. We really were discussing this. We really were talking about where one of the top Web hosts would wind up. My money was on G4. My husband was betting on another Web show.
Guess he won. Because Revision3 announced this week that it had snagged Ms. Belmont and her loyal online following for its show “Tekzilla.” She’ll join as the co-host.
Why do I share this? Simply to let you know that we’re a bunch of tech geeks, gawking at every possible online celebrity move? Well, kind of.
But also because I think the level of interest in my house, but more important in the blogosphere, demonstrates yet another level of maturation in the online video business. She stirred up a huge amount of talk about where she would land after she announced late last week that she was leaving the Mahalo mother ship with its 50,000 to 60,000 views each day,
So I am officially declaring that the online talent wars have begun!
Ms. Belmont’s shift from Mahalo Daily to Revision3, brokered by her ICM agent as the press release pointed out, will be just one of many, many more talent switcheroos. Which means that, yet again, the online video world is starting to look and act a lot like traditional TV. The key players are betting on ad support as their business model, they’re shooting their shows in spiffy hi-def facilities and they are doing deals with big-time Hollywood agents.
So what’s next? Or rather, who’s next?
Well, in my house, we’re busy speculating on whether the blog Valleywag.com is right in predicting technology commentator iJustine will replace Ms. Belmont on “Mahalo Daily.”
What do you think?

  1. You care for public figure chit chat? Don’t like it? Would you take very long lunches from employment when you’re conscious when the most up to date issue of Playboy will hit the newstands? I so want to establish what number of everyone actually find super star gossip compelling, and in what ways many quite frankly feel the obsession with it plain silly.

  2. I love the expression. Everyone needs to express there own opinion and feel free to hear others. Keep it up 🙂
