CW Party Gets Hot After ABC’s Upfront

ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson closed his efficient 2008-2009 programming presentation at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall by thanking The CW for throwing ABC’s upfront party Tuesday afternoon.
He was just joking, of course. The CW’s party immediately followed ABC’s presentation. And getting to The CW’s tent on the northern perimeter of Lincoln Center was no sweat, literally or figuratively, for ad buyers.
The CW party was hot, hot, hot. Literally. (As in a blast of summery heat and perspiration that greeted the crowd that had just come in from the sort of mild and breezy afternoon that New Yorkers treasure.)
The green carpet outside was the place to be as The CW’s returning stars talked to TV crews. Blake Lively of “Gossip Girl” did the stroll, as did new stars including Tristan Wilds, who won critics’ hearts and minds on “The Wire,” and who is going to put help The CW put a new spin on “Beverly Hills, 90210.”
Pop-rock band Maroon 5 kicked off the festivities, allowing the crowd inside to feel hip as well as hot.
The only thing missing: ABC executives schmoozing the buyers.
But there had been fair warning from Jimmy Kimmel.
The appearance of ABC’s late-night host and modern master of the insult, along with the first preview clips of the week, made ABC’s presentation seem almost like business as usual, not business crimped by the 100-day writers strike.
“We’re not doing a party this year,” Mr. Kimmel said during his network’s presentation. “ABC might be the worst date ever. We expect you to put out and we don’t even buy you a drink.”
