Disney-ABC Television gave a little more detail on its plans to overhaul its full-episode player for a fall launch on flagship site ABC.com.
The new player aims to increase ease and add customization for improved viewing, which the network hopes will please users and advertisers alike.
Based on research conducted earlier this year, ABC estimates the player has generated 300 million episode views, with 88% of surveyed consumers rating it positively.
New features are set to include true full-screen viewing, enhanced navigation and video search capabilities, content-sharing tools, content recommendation functions, closed captioning and parental ratings.
“Since we launched the ABC.com full episode player in 2006, we’ve been continually looking at ways to make a great product even better,” Alexis Rapo, vice president of digital media at ABC Entertainment, said in a statement Thursday. “The clean, new user interface, powerful search tools and other enhanced functionality features like true full-screen and closed captioning are examples of how we’re again raising the bar when it comes to online video.”

Even better would be ABC opening up all its online episodes to international internet users wanting to watch. Until the U.S. networks (and all TV outlets running content online, of course) figure out that allowing anybody to watch, from anywhere, is the way to go — give the fans what they want — it will always feel like a rude rebuff to the rest of the world to be shut out of these websites. Yes…I know that there are agreements, etc., but this is the 21st century and access is everything, and expected…always.
I just hope they will find a way to streamline things so that those of us who don’t have T1 connections can finally watch without shows stalling all the time. Maybe including some sort of caching system so we can pause and let the feed get ahead of us. After all, not everyone can afford the newest, most expensive toys.
