Starz Entertainment to Add Encore HD in July
Starz Entertainment will have its fifth high-definition channel when it adds Encore HD in July. The Liberty Media unit said the HD version of Encore, whose flagship channel has more than 31 million subscribers, this year will feature such films as “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me” and “Gone in Sixty Seconds.”
Blu-ray Player Dominance May Be Four Years Off
Blu-rays won’t account for the majority of DVD player market share until 2012 because of their high prices and the continued popularity of DVD burners, research firm IDC said this week. By then, manufacturers will ship more than 100 million Blu-ray drives annually while DVD burners will have “saturated” personal computers, IDC said.
Barnes & Noble Starts Carrying Blu-ray DVDs
Barnes & Noble this week began selling Blu-ray DVDs, Web site TVPredictions.com reports. As part of the addition, the largest U.S. bookstore chain began a promotion in which customers can buy one disc and get another free, the Web site says.
Sony Doubles Electronics Profit Despite LCD Price Drops
Sony Corp. said this week it doubled earnings for the year ended March 31 to 369.4 billion yen ($3.69 billion). It more than doubled its electronics unit’s operating profit despite a drop in average price of its high-selling Bravia liquid-crystal display televisions. The company didn’t break out or mention Blu-ray sales.
Sharp Unveils 52-Inch and 46-Inch HD LCDs
Sharp this week unveiled two more high-definition liquid-crystal display televisions. Sharp, which has about 8% of North America’s LCD market share, said its 52-inch TL-M5200 model will retail for $4,995; its 46-inch TL-M4600 will cost $3,995.
HD Filming Brings on Make-up, Lighting Changes
More high-definition filming of television shows have caused producers to use techniques such as softened lighting and spray-on makeup to cover skin flaws that are more visible in HD, MSNBC reports. Both unions representing makeup artists and cosmetics companies are holding seminars to teach techniques on how to best hide flaws that jump out in HD, MSNBC says.
Wal-Mart May Sell Magnavox Blu-ray Player for $298
Wal-Mart will begin selling a Magnavox Blu-ray player for $298 during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, Video Business reports, citing people in the industry it didn’t identify. The machine will be made by Funai and will be sold at Best Buy starting in July for $349, according to the magazine, which said Wal-Mart officials didn’t respond to a request for comment.
