TCM Plans Tribute to Pollack

May 28, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Turner Classic Movies will pay tribute to Oscar-winning filmmaker Sydney Pollack on June 2 with an evening of programming.
Beginning at 8 p.m., TCM will air “The Slender Thread,” Pollack’s directorial debut from 1965, “Three Days of the Condor,” “Tootsie” and “Jeremiah Johnson.” The last film and “Three Days of the Condor” mark two of the director’s seven collaborations with actor-filmmaker Robert Redford.
“TCM Presents Elvis Mitchell: Under the Influence” will premiere July 7 at 8 p.m. with one of Pollack’s last interviews before his death. The program will be followed by an encore of “Tootsie” and the Gene Kelly film “An American in Paris,” which Pollack said was a strong influence on his life and work.
“Sydney Pollack was a great friend to Turner Classic Movies and a champion of preserving the cinematic arts,” said Charles Tabesh, senior VP of programming for TCM. “As one-time host of TCM’s weekly showcase ‘The Essentials,’ he displayed his extraordinary passion for film by introducing viewers to some of the greatest movies ever made. We are grateful that he was eager to participate in our new series with Elvis Mitchell, which sadly turned out to be the one of the last interviews he gave. He will be sorely missed.”
Pollack died of cancer Monday at the age of 73.
