Univision Touts Spanish-Language Programming’s Growth at Upfront

May 14, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Calling its viewers “the growth engine of tomorrow,” Spanish-language media company Univision unveiled its 2008-09 programming lineup to advertisers Wednesday.
The media company, which has holdings across broadcast, cable and the Internet, presented statistics that suggest Spanish-language programming has been steadily gaining audience while English-language network viewership has declined in the past five years.
The presentation included testimonials by reps from AT&T, Ford, General Motors and Miller Lite about the benefits of advertising to Hispanic viewers. Nielsen Media Research also introduced a new joint tool, Fusion, which measures viewing habits against purchasing habits.
In addition to its programming announcements, Univision unveiled “Piensa Verde, Actúa Verde” (Think Green, Act Green), a programming initiative to encourage ecological responsibility in its lifestyle and news shows.
“This year’s upfront is not about marketing to Hispanics, but about marketing itself,” said Univision President Joe Uva. “It’s about the gap between the true power of the Hispanic consumer to grow brands and those advertisers who have yet to realize that a marketing strategy that is not fully committed to the Hispanic consumer is hardly a winning strategy.”

  1. I believe the “Sabado Gigante” translates as and is on Saturday, not Sunday. And hey, the old “Sabado Gigante” is pretty entertaining — hope it’s not too changed. Let’s not lose Don Francisco, please!
There is nothing quite as interactive and affectionate as the whole “Sabado Gigante” experience. Sort of like a combo of “The Price is Right” and Ellen DeGeneres’ show. I highly recommend that anybody take a look at it, even if you don’t speak Spanish.
