CBS Corp. has completed its acquisition of CNET Networks, which will be merged into the operations of the CBS Interactive division.
The newly expanded division will incorporate all the online brands of CBS and CNET Networks, making CBS Interactive the eighth-largest Web network worldwide. In addition, CBS Interactive is now one of the top five premium content ad-supported networks online.
The business unit will be made up of five vertical categories designed to appeal to people with similar interests. The Web site category groups will be technology, entertainment, sports, news and business.
“From entertainment, news and sports to technology, games and business, the combination of CBS and CNET Networks gives us the content and scale to be leaders on a platform that is gaining audience share faster than any other,” Leslie Moonves, president and CEO of CBS Corp., said in a statement. “Our unparalleled collection of sites will be an extremely powerful vehicle for advertisers to reach highly attractive demographics. At the same time, CBS Interactive will extend and leverage the power of our traditional businesses, as well as serve as a platform to launch the next generation of leading interactive properties that will play a central role in CBS’s future.”
Quincy Smith has been named the CEO of CBS Interactive, while Neil Ashe will serve as president of the division.
