McCain Launches National Ad Offensive

Jun 11, 2008  •  Post A Comment

John McCain’s campaign says it is buying the first post-primary TV advertisements of the presidential election, making the buy on cable networks including Fox News Channel, CNN and Lifetime.
The campaign will use the time to give national airing to a biographical message the campaign released last week in some key battleground states. The spot, produced by the campaign’s Foxhole Productions ad team, features the Arizona Republican speaking to viewers about national security.
“Only a fool or a fraud talks tough or romantically about war. When I was five years old, my father left for war,” Senator McCain says in the spot. “My grandfather came home from war and died the next day. I was shot down over Vietnam and spent five years as a POW. Some of the friends I served with never came home.”
It concludes with the senator saying, “I’m running for president to keep the country I love safe.”

The McCain campaign declined to say how much it is spending on the ad, but the three-week national airing of the spot could indicate cable networks will benefit during the upcoming months as the McCain and Obama camps devise their advertising strategies.
Representatives from Lifetime said they couldn’t confirm the ad purchase.
There has been some speculation that the increase in the number of potential states in play in November could dictate a summer of national advertising in the campaigns. Later, when the campaigns understand better which states are still in contest, more spending may shift to local TV stations.
The more big states in play, the more the economics of reaching voters can tilt toward buying national advertising.
Four years ago when about a dozen states were in play during the general election, most advertising was targeted to battleground states.
The Obama campaign hasn’t yet launched its post-primary advertising but is expected to do so in the next day or so.

  1. I enjoy the fact that McCain is using the media to his advantage but, I don’t agree much with what he says. I mean just yesterday on a report he said, “We will stay in Iraq for a hundred years if we have too.” But today he says that he dislikes war. I feel that a person running for office should have clear statements and not contradict themselves on a day to day basis. Also, I would like to add that networks should stay nuetral and run both ad campaigns and not just that of their perfered party.

  2. Was McCain talking about himself when he said that “only a fool or a fraud talks tough or romantically about war”? Here is a guy who constantly brings up his family’s warring history and wants to keep our men and women in the field for generations to come with no real plan for success other than following Bush’s fraudulent and failed attempts at empire building. This old man who talks constantly about war should stay home and tell his great grandchildren his war stories…not us.

  3. Funny, we’ve been in Germany, Japan and Korea with tens if not hundreds of thousands of soldiers for nearly 60 years now; are we at war with those countries? Where’s the contradiction, then?
