More Than 1 Mil 3-D HDTVs Will Be Sold in U.S. by Year End
More than 1 million 3-D high-definition television sets will have been sold in the U.S. by the end of the year, with most coming from Mitsubishi and Samsung, USA Today reports. Walt Disney will release the first Blu-ray 3-D DVD when it starts selling “Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds 3-D Concert” in August, complete with 3-D glasses, the newspaper says.
Advertisers Lose Info on Conversion to HDTVs
Designers of television advertisements are trying to figure out how to properly adjust ads made for high-definition television screens to fit on standard-definition screens, which are more square than their rectangular HDTV counterparts, Advertising Age reports. About 6% of HD ads lose “vital” information when the spots are shown on standard TVs, the magazine says.
007 Will Get Six of His Films on Blu-ray in October
Six James Bond films, including “Dr. No,” “Live and Let Die” and “From Russia With Love,” will be released on Blu-ray in October, MGM and Fox Home Entertainment said. “Die Another Day,” “For Your Eyes Only” and “Thunderball” also get the Blu-ray treatment Oct. 21.
Pricier Doesn’t Mean Better With Digital Converter Boxes
The most expensive digital converter boxes, which over-the-air customers will need to buy when the U.S. switches to digital broadcasts in February, weren’t the best ones, Consumer Reports says. The Microgem MG200, at $65, and the Tivax STB-T9, at $50, had the best picture quality of the 14 boxes tested, the magazine says.
Samsung Gives Blu-ray Advice on New Web Page
Samsung launched a Web page on its company site dedicated to giving customers advice about Blu-ray, TVPredictions.com reports. The site, at http://pages.samsung.com/us/bluraysupport/, includes topics such as how close to the television viewers need to sit to get the full effect. Dolby Digital also has jumped on the tutorial bandwagon by including its own Blu-ray how-to page on its Web site, Electronic House reports.
Cox Will Broadcast HD Version of Hallmark Movie Channel
Cox Communications will start offering the high-definition version of the Hallmark Movie Channel to its 6 million cable subscribers. Cox, the No. 3 U.S. cable company behind Comcast and Time Warner Cable, had already been broadcasting the standard-definition version of the Hallmark Movie Channel, which is owned by Crown Media Holdings.
