Syndie Ad Growth Strong in Weak Quarter

Spending on advertising in syndicated television shows jumped during a first quarter that overall showed little growth.
Total measured ad spending rose 0.6% in the first quarter of 2008, compared to the same period in 2007, according to new data from TNS Media Intelligence.
“Enduring concerns about economic conditions and consumer spending behavior continued to cast a pall over the advertising market during the first quarter,” said Jon Swallen, senior VP of Research at TNSMI. “After a hopeful start to the year, the pace of ad spending slowed perceptibly during March and early figures from the second quarter indicate little immediate or sustained improvement in the core ad economy.”
Syndication was up 11.2%, while cable TV gained 4.1%. Spanish-language TV increased 4.4%
Broadcast network TV, hampered by the Writers Guild of America strike, was still up 0.8%, while spot TV was down 2.4% despite strong political spending.
Ad spending on the Internet was up 8.5%, according to the TNSMI study.
