Jun 17, 2008  •  Post A Comment

ESPN’s coverage of Monday’s U.S. Open final playoff, in which Tiger Woods beat Rocco Mediate, was the most-watched golf telecast in the history of cable TV. The matchup had 4.2 household ratings and 4.7 million viewers.
The previous high for a golf telecast on ESPN happened during the network’s coverage of the 2008 Masters, which reached a 3.1 household rating, viewed in about 3 million households.
The strong ratings also helped carry ESPN.com to significant increases in traffic. The site had more than 5.1 million visits between June 12 and June 16, the duration of the U.S. Open, up 256% from last year’s coverage. The final playoff alone drove 2.4 million visits to the site.
