GOP Launches Biggest Ad Offensive of Election

Jul 2, 2008  •  Post A Comment

The Republican National Committee is launching its biggest advertising push of the presidential campaign in hopes of creating momentum for Sen. John McCain, who is trailing in the polls.
The $3 million purchase of advertising time may signal that Republicans will be able to counter Democrat Sen. Barack Obama’s towering fundraising advantage over the GOP candidate.
The latest Republican ads will compare Sen. Obama’s stance on energy security with Sen. McCain’s, likely focusing on how best to deal with high gas prices. The energy message will initially run on TV stations in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Wisconsin through mid-July.
Details on the creative content were not immediately being released.
The ad is being paid for by a newly created independent expenditure unit of the Republican National Committee that will air messages bolstering McCain.
By not coordinating messages with either the McCain campaign or the Republican National Committee itself, the GOP independent expenditure unit can raise and spend additional money.
The McCain campaign will get $85 million for the fall campaign from federal financing; the party can spend only $19 million on any effort it coordinates with the McCain campaign. That was expected to put Republicans at a disadvantage against Sen. Obama in spending.
The formation of the new independent expenditure committee was first reported by Politico.com.
The independent expenditure committee is being headed by Brad Todd of OnMessage, an Alexandria, Va., ad agency that was involved in the Mitt Romney campaign.
In a statement, Mr. Todd said the independent expenditure unit was formed in reaction to Sen. Obama’s decision to forgo public financing.
“Following Barack Obama’s decision to become the only major party presidential candidate in history to not adhere to campaign spending caps, the Republican National Committee has begun an independent expenditure campaign,” he said.

  4. I’m with you Sandra (even if you can’t spel) Who is Obama anyway? He voted “present” 129 times in the Illinois Legislature-couldn’t seem to make up his mind about the issues. My question is-who will tell him what to do if he is elected; MoveOn.org, George Soros, or Nancy P.? He’s like a Class A high school quarterback being told on Friday night that he will be playing in the Super Bowl on Sunday. No experience-nada!
So yes, Sandra and Daniel, I’ll be sending my check in too. Good Luck John! I’m with you.
