McPherson Says ‘Scrubs’ May Live On

“Scrubs” might not be headed into its final season after all.
When ABC picked up the comedy from NBC in May, the assumption was that the show would complete one valedictory season, and then call it quits. But ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson Wednesday said he has talked to “Scrubs” creator Bill Lawrence about the show continuing beyond its current one-season order, with or without the current cast.
“It’s a show that, despite being moved around into like 17 time periods and really never being given the marketing support, has really performed unbelievably well on NBC,” Mr. McPherson said. “So we’re excited to have it as part of our comedy assets, and we do think that it will not hopefully be a one-season situation. But we’ll just take that step by step.”
Mr. Lawrence said that while this will “most likely (be) Zach Braff’s final season on the show,” Mr. McPherson is on board with the idea of “Scrubs” as the “ER” of comedy—a show that lasts for many years with many cast changes.
“It’s one of those never-say-never situations,” Mr. Lawrence said. “If this show pulls a legitimate number … there’s a chance it could go forward.”
