The Washington Post Co. is buying Miami’s WTVJ-TV from NBC Universal.
Post-Newsweek Stations, which already owns ABC-affiliated WPLJ-TV in Miami, will operate WTVJ as an NBC affiliate, part of a duopoly in the market.
No terms were disclosed, but previous reports had put WTVJ’s potential value at $350 million to $400 million.
Approval by the Federal Communications Commission is required, but the announcement Friday said the purchase is expected to be completed by the end of the year, expanding Post-Newsweek to seven stations.
“We are pleased to be able to reach an agreement to purchase such a historic station as WTVJ, the first TV station to broadcast in Florida. We look forward to both WPLG and WTVJ continuing to serve the South Florida community,” Alan Frank, president and chief executive officer of Post-Newsweek Stations, said in the announcement.
“Post-Newsweek has been a strong affiliate partner of ours for many years,” NBC Local Media President John Wallace said in the announcement. “They are seasoned broadcasters, who have a solid reputation in the industry. We look forward to working with Post-Newsweek as an affiliate owner for many years to come.”
NBCU’s WVIT-TV in Hartford, Conn., which also was put up for sale in March with WTVJ, remains on the market.
