Comcast to Boost 2009 Spending for HD Channels
Comcast, the U.S. cable television leader, will significantly boost its capital expenditures next year in an effort to widen its inventory of high-definition channels, Multichannel News reports, citing Collins Stewart analyst Thomas Eagan. Comcast has about half as many HD channels as satellite leader DirecTV, though the cabler has boosted its HD video-on-demand inventory this year. Meanwhile, AT&T is planning to add four high-definition channels to its U-verse fiber-optic TV service, including NBC Universal’s Bravo and USA cable networks, Web site Engadgethd.com reports.
LG’s Q2 Profit to Triple on HDTV Sales
LG Display next week will report that second-quarter earnings more than tripled on a jump in high-definition television sales, Web site Engadgethd.com reports, citing Lehman Bros. analyst James Kim. HDTV sales for the rest of the year will slow on the U.S. economic downturn, the analyst said.
Pioneer to Release Blu-ray Recorders in Japan by Year End
Pioneer, in a development partnership with Sharp, will start selling Blu-ray recorders in Japan by the end of the year, Reuters reports. The company didn’t say when it would start selling the players in the U.S. or how they would be priced, the wire service says.
‘Christmas Story’ to Go Blu-ray, Red Ryder Rifle Not Included
Warner Home Video will release 1983’s “A Christmas Story” in Blu-ray on Nov. 4 as part of a 25th-anniversary celebration. And, yes, Ralphie, the HD disc, which will sell for $49.99, will be packaged in a special retro cookie tin.
Mojo HD, USA Today Series Profiles Olympic Athletes
Mojo HD and USA Today will premiere a 10-part high-definition series on U.S. Olympic athletes July 28. “A Shot at Glory,” which will be shown each weekday, will profile competitors such as swimmer Kate Ziegler, boxer Gary Russell Jr. and wrestler Daniel Cormier, in addition to past U.S. medal winners Mary Lou Retton and Sugar Ray Leonard.
Blu-ray Disc Association Designates First China Testing Center
The Blu-ray Disc Association designated CESI Technology as the first Blu-ray disc testing center in China. The nonprofit CESI also has joined the association.
