Cell phone users in the Tri-State area covered by New York station WNBC-TV will be able to get a look at real-time traffic 24 hours a day with the launch of NBC New York Traffic Cam.
Free to mobile phone subscribers who have an unlimited data plan on any network, the service uses streaming video from more than 400 roadside cameras positioned by local transportation departments at key traffic points throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
“This advances WNBC’s goal of delivering relevant, local content, whenever and wherever users want it. And it offers advertisers a unique opportunity to reach a highly engaged audience,” WNBC President and General Manager Tom O’Brien said in the announcement Tuesday.
Users download the application from the WNBC Web site or via a toll-free number and then choose the cameras with the view they need from a menu. Frequently checked locations can be bookmarked.
