Metacafe Adopts Wiki-Style User Updates

Online video site Metacafe said it’s now allowing site visitors to update the tags, titles and descriptions for video on its site, similar to how Wikipedia works, the company announced today.
The goal is to improve video search and recommendations, founder Eyal Hertzog told TelevisionWeek in a phone interview.
“We want to make it as easy as possible for people to find videos on Metacafe and to recommend videos they are likely to enjoy. This will help,” he said.
The wiki functionality also can improve overall search results for Metacafe’s videos. That’s because letting users edit descriptions can reduce “tag abuse,” in which a video uploader tries to game the system by using inaccurate tags. In addition, viewers who are irked by misspellings in video tags can correct those details, which also can improve search results.
Metacafe said it draws 30 million unique visitors each month.
