‘Office’ Creator Daniels Practicing for Super Bowl

Aug 17, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Greg Daniels is putting in a lot of overtime at “The Office” lately.
In addition to preparing for the fifth season of his NBC hit—and the special Olympics promos the network is using to hype said return—Mr. Daniels has been busy working on a new half-hour for NBC that will star “Saturday Night Live” regular Amy Poehler. The project, at least temporarily, replaces a spinoff of “The Office” that NBC executives insist Mr. Daniels will also get to, eventually.
Also on Mr. Daniels’ plate: crafting a one-hour episode of “The Office” that could air after the Super Bowl. He also had a hand in those “Office” webisodes NBC.com has been running over the summer.
While juggling all that, Mr. Daniels found time to respond to a few e-mail questions from TelevisionWeek.
TelevisionWeek: You could have let NBC marketing write the scripts for the ads. Why take the time to do it yourself?
Greg Daniels: If our actors are doing the promos, then I think we as writers should have to pitch in, too. Besides, they were fun and have been seen by many times the audience for our episodes. These Olympic promos are probably the most widely seen pieces of entertainment I have ever been involved with, and I hope will be my legacy.
TVWeek: How much time did you spend on these promos?
Mr. Daniels:
The writers room spent an afternoon generating scripts, they were shot as quickly as comparable-length scenes and edited in a hurry.
TVWeek: What can you tell us about the plotlines for some of the upcoming Olympics promos?
Mr. Daniels:
Michael tries to get the next Olympics held in Scranton, Dwight tosses a homemade javelin, and people express their opinions about the sport of beach volleyball.
TVWeek: How’s work on the possible post-Super Bowl episode of “The Office” going?
Mr. Daniels:
Our promos are getting a lot of positive attention in an environment of 70 million sports fans watching, so it’s good practice for post-Super Bowl.
