ABC Picks Up Web-Derived Series ‘Motherhood’

ABC is adding another comedy to its series roster, ordering 13 episodes of “In the Motherhood.”
The project, which is based on the Internet-based series of the same name, has been in development at ABC since last spring. ABC Studios is producing.
A studio spokeswoman said no deals are yet in place for casting on “Motherhood.” The original Web series stars Leah Remini, Jenny McCarthy and Chelsea Handler.
“Motherhood” sprung from an online campaign sponsored by Sprint and Suave via Mindshare. All three parties will be involved in the TV series.
ABC has a history of finding comedies in unique places. Last season, it launched the half-hour comedy “Cavemen,” which was inspired by the Geico cavemen ad campaign.
The last Internet-to-TV project to air was NBC’s “Quarterlife,” which was canceled almost as soon as it hit the airwaves.
Jennifer Konner, Alexandra Rushfield, Stu Bloomberg, David Lang and Peter Tortorici are the executive producers of “Motherhood.”
Late last month, ABC ordered three new dramas and two new comedies for broadcast later this season.
