Couric Used in Swipe at Obama

Sep 10, 2008  •  Post A Comment

CBS News so far is not commenting on the decision by Sen. John McCain’s campaign to use video of “Evening News” anchor Katie Couric to chastise Democratic candidate Barack Obama in a new Web advertisement.
The new McCain ad rips Sen. Obama for his use of the “you can put lipstick on a pig” idiom yesterday on the campaign trail, a reference that Obama opponents have said was a dig at Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin.
The new ad uses a quick cutting technique to switch between three videos. The first, from the GOP convention, features Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s GOP convention speech comparing hockey moms to pit bulls, saying the only difference between the two is that the dog doesn’t wear lipstick. After a quick cut, the second features Sen. Obama’s comment yesterday saying “you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.” After another quick cut, the third, features Ms. Couric.
“One of the great lessons of that campaign is the continued and accepted role of sexism in American life,” Ms. Couric says in the ad.
The McCain campaign first began highlighting the Obama comment yesterday and the Obama campaign reacted furiously, denouncing it as “pathetic.” The McCain campaign suggested that Mr. Obama’s “pig” comment represented a gender attack on Ms. Palin.
The Obama campaign reacted, noting Sen. McCain in the past has used the “pig” expression.
Obama campaign senior advisor Anita Dunn in a statement last night called the McCain campaign’s attack on the comment, “a pathetic attempt to play the gender card about the use of a common analogy–the same analogy that Sen. McCain himself used about Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s health care plan just last year. This phony lecture on gender sensitivity is the height of cynicism and lays bare the increasingly dishonorable campaign John McCain has chosen to run,” she said.

  1. It is SO comforting to see the quiet Republicans FINALLY fight back using tactics formerly reserved for the radical left. God Bless John McCain for finally waking up! He’s earned my vote!

  2. McCain is pathetic. McSaim is trying to change subject claiming sexism when he himself has used that phrase. Obama was talking about how Bush and McCain have same policies. The American people deserve better. McCain has voted against all women issues. He is against equal pay for women. He is against a womens right to choose. Pailin is pro-life even in case of rape or incest. She praised her daughter for making the right choice by keeping her baby but under a MCSaim presidency she would not even have a choice. McCain even voted against schip which is health care for children. His economic plan is the same as Bush’s except he would tax our health care for the few of us who have it. He also voted against the GI Bill that he actually used back in the day. We cant afford to be lied to anymore. The public deserves some honesty.

  3. These attacts on Obama are childish, and even a child could see there’s no truth in them. Let’s stick to the issue that will help our country in the future. McCain plays these childish games now, what will he do if elected. Besides he’s an old man, why not act his age. Obama shows leadership, muterity and integrity.

  4. It would be nice to think that American voters have “had enough” with Rovian tactics, but…don’t hold your breath.
Cheney & Bush were sold, twice.
The Republicans are Masters of the Universe. At spin. Still.
Rove is reaching the casual voter, someone who barely tunes in to politics, but can be swayed with simple, gross deception.
They’ve got nothing. “Lipstick on a Pig” is a common expression. And it had been used by Obama a dozen times before Palin came on the ticket.
For a look at the history of this expression in recent American politics, see the good article in the (I kid you not) Washington Times: http://tinyurl.com/6s3tal
“Mr. McCain, meanwhile, has used the folksy saying on the campaign trail himself, including at one appearance to describe former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s health care plan.”
As with the Swift-Boating of Kerry, it’s “game on” now. It will be “game over” if things don’t change at Obama HQ.
Thomas Freidman (NYT) got it right yesterday:
Obama and his people need to keep their ear on the street (in the Walmart?). And respond better. Way better.
If Rove can win this thing (again) after what Cheney and Bush and the Republicans have done to our county, it will be so very sad, and familiar.
And a triumph of marketing, *again*.
Do Something! barack obama dot com Send ’em some coin or volunteer, please. And hope they get some fire in their bellies.

  5. When is John going to start speaking for himself and stop letting Sarah do all of his talking ?
Yes , she is pretty , exuberant , vibrant , funny …But his campaign still stinks , and getting a beautiful woman to act as his spokesperson doesn’t change a thing . Maybe that’s what Barack should have said !

  6. And leave Katie out of it …OK ?

  7. Mcain or Mcsame! Should stop playing dirty and taking Americans for a ride. Its obvious he has nothing to offer on economy, education and all the issues that we really care about. His latest tatics of distraction will not fly. Not even his trying to bring in Palin through the back door.
we are electing a president not a VP coming through the back door.
Obama is talking issues, if Mcsame has nothing to say he can go to Iraq where he might have something to do. Dont distract Obama.
