New Syndie Strips Dip Slightly in 2nd Day

Day two for the new crop of syndicated series saw ratings decline for the most part, although some series are still claiming first place in some major-market time slots, according to Nielsen Media Research.
The three top-rated new series—“The Doctors,” “Deal or No Deal” and “The Bonnie Hunt Show”—all saw dips of a tenth of a point in their second day on the air.
CBS’ talk show “The Doctors” dropped to a 1.4 rating/4 share in day two, down 7% from its Monday premiere. The hourlong strip was down 13% from its lead-in and is off 22% from the 2007 time period average, the biggest decline of any of the new shows.
However, “The Doctors” saw some growth in top-20 markets and scored as the top-rated series in its time slot in Atlanta, where it earned a 2.4/9, as well as Denver with a 1.4/6 and Sacramento with a 2.2/7.
“Deal or No Deal” had the second highest rating, with a 1.2/3, down 8% from Monday’s numbers. That score is down 8% from its lead in and off 14% from year-ago numbers. The NBC Universal series is showing growth in Los Angeles, where it ballooned 75% from Monday to Tuesday to a 0.7/2 and is performing well in access at 7:30 p.m. in Cleveland, rising 69% to a 2.7/12.
Warner Bros.’ talk show “The Bonnie Hunt Show” earned a 1.0/3 in day two, down 9% from its premiere rating. That score is off 29% from its lead-in and down 9% from year-ago numbers. The series’ two-day average within its target women 25-54 demographic is improving the time period, however, rating a 0.5/4 to hold even with its lead-in and up 25% in year-to-year comparisons.
The series also scores as the top-rated series in its time period in two of the top 20 markets, with a 1.8/8 in Seattle and a 2.7/12 in Cleveland.
Among the two new court shows, Sony’s “Judge Karen” jumped 38% from Monday to Tuesday to earn a 1.1/3. That score is even with its lead-in and up 10% from year-ago time period performance.
Program Partners’ “Family Court With Judge Penny” also dodged the day-two downtrend, earning a 0.9/3, even with Monday’s numbers and up 13% from its lead-in as well as year-ago time period numbers.
Within national ratings for the last week of August, court shows saw an overall uptick despite increased competition due to the Democratic National Convention. Not one of the series in the category saw a decline, and five saw ratings increases.
“Judge Judy” remained the No. 1-rated series in daytime, rising 2% to a 4.4 score. “Judge Joe Brown” was up 4% to a 2.4, “The People’s Court” grew 5% to a 2.2, “Judge Mathis” rose 12% to a 1.9 and “Cristina’s Court” was up 9% to a 1.2. The rest of the genre held even with the previous week’s ratings.
