Positive Reinforcement: Ed Delaney

Sep 18, 2008  •  Post A Comment

The player: Ed Delaney, VP of operations at YES Network
The play: Mr. Delaney, an original employee at YES (Yankees Entertainment and Sports) starting in 2001, helped lead the network’s high-definition improvements, including the telecasting of all New York Yankees baseball games starting in 2004 and launching a 24/7 HD channel last year, after the company built a 30,000-square-foot HD studio at its Stamford, Conn., facilities. The channel, owned primarily by the Yankees, Goldman Sachs and Providence Equity, airs all of the approximately 210 Yankees baseball and New Jersey Nets basketball games it broadcasts each year in HD, in addition to all of the other shows it produces, such as pre-game and post-game shows, Mr. Delaney says. “Once you get in front of an HD set, especially with sports, you have to have it,” Mr. Delaney says.
The pitch: Further improvements at New York-based YES include a second HD facility in Connecticut, due to be completed next year, that will allow the channel to air more than one high-definition broadcast at a time. The network, which reaches about 12 million Tri-State and DirecTV-subscribing households, was the first to employ “super slow-motion” displays for baseball in HD early last year—Fox Sports and ESPN have since included that feature on their broadcasts—and gives DirecTV subscribers interactive capabilities, such as changing which HD camera is on screen and checking out-of-town scores, Mr. Delaney says. YES uses 16 cameras for all Yankee games except for when the Boston Red Sox come to town—then it uses 20.
Backstory: Mr. Delaney, 47, joined YES in October 2001, five months before the channel launched, after working for ABC Sports in New York for about 10 years. He and John Filippelli, YES’ president of production and programming, for whom Mr. Delaney also worked at ABC, “brought our network sensibilities to the Yankees and YES Network and we knew how improve to our brand for Madison Avenue and Wall Street.” Raised in Philadelphia, Mr. Delaney attended Millersville University in Pennsylvania.
