BET acquired the first network TV window rights to three films from The Weinstein Co.
Two of the films are about to be released theatrically: “Soul Men,” starring Samuel L. Jackson and the late Bernie Mack, and “Hurricane Season,” featuring Forest Whitaker. The third film is “The Longshots.”
The network also got rights to air “The Great Debaters” as part of the package.
BET will help to promote the theatrical releases of “Soul Men” and “Hurricane Season.” The network will broadcast a red carpet premiere of “Soul Men” from the Apollo Theater on Oct. 28 during its “106 & Park” show, which will be re-named “106 & Soul Men” that evening.
To promote “Hurricane Season,” BET will air a prime-time special from John Ehret High School, in Marrero, La., featuring a panel discussion with players from the basketball team upon which the film is based.
“We’re excited to start this new relationship with BET,” said Lee Solomon, chief operating officer for the Weinstein Co. “These are great films that should be seen by the widest possible audience and have found a perfect home with BET.”
“Movies perform exceptionally well on our network, and with the addition of compelling and entertaining Weinstein films, we are confident that we will be giving our audience more of what they want,” said Stephen G. Hill, executive VP of music programming and talent and interim head of entertainment for BET Networks.
