NBC Stations Launch ‘Locals Only’ Web Sites

Oct 13, 2008  •  Post A Comment

NBC Local Media will launch city-specific Web sites for some of its major markets, beginning today with a new “Locals Only” online destination for Chicago residents.
The new sites will provide visitors with news, photos, videos and blogs from NBC local stations as well as aggregated sources in order to serve “local consumers who are looking to stay ahead of the curve and get plugged in to all their city has to offer.”
Over the coming days other cities to get the “Locals Only” treatment online will be Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington, New York and Hartford.
“These sites are a departure from what we’ve done in the past and the next step in our mission to provide truly relevant local content to consumers on the media platform of their choice,” NBC Local Media President John Wallace said. “Our goal was to create a new type of use experience that’s less an extension of our TV stations and more of an online destination for the latest local news, information and entertainment.”
NBC Local Integrated Media Senior VP Brain Buchwald added, “What we found is the group we’re calling ‘Social Capitalists,’ who are less about a specific demo and more about a state of mind.”
NBCChicago.com went live Monday afternoon. NBCLosAngeles.com, NBCSanDiego.com and NBCBayArea.com launch Oct. 16, followed by NBCDFW.com, NBCPhiladelphia.com and NBCWashington.com on Oct. 20, and NBCConnecticut.com and NBCNewYork.com on Oct. 27.

  1. I just looked at the site in Chicago and to no surprise a totally dud of a television station website. No wonder these television stations can’t turn a profit with digital properties- they can’t even design a functional or easy to navigate website. When the story icons load I feel like I’m watching a digital slot machine in Las Vegas. I feel only engaging content is in the “Around Town” section but I still have to go at least three clicks into the page to find any video content to begin with. Oh, and how creative- a “poll” in the middle of the page-wow they are really pushing the envelope with that one. Hello???? This is 2008, not 1998, AOL is no longer the online service of choice and people actually do watch online video. I can’t even link these stories to Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter. This is what happens when a bunch of balding executives are in charge of creating a new platform. And the quote, “NBC Local Integrated Media Senior VP Brain Buchwald added, “What we found is the group we’re calling ‘Social Capitalists,’ who are less about a specific demo and more about a state of mind.” WTF??? does this even mean? I think TV station websites are just so poorly conceptualized from start to finish, given the resources these companies have, and I hope as time goes on they start to realize that they they should be using kids in high school to direct them as to where the internet is headed.
