‘SNL’ Palin Skits: Seen More on Web Than TV

Oct 1, 2008  •  Post A Comment

More than half of the viewers for “Saturday Night Live’s” recent skits featuring Tina Fey as Sarah Palin watched the sketches on the Web as of Sept.29, according to a survey conducted by Solutions Research Group.
About 51% of viewers who have seen at least one of the skits are watching on the Internet, indicating that viewing preferences for this type of content are shifting toward the computer.
About 23% of all views came from YouTube, including video of other talk shows that showed clips of the skit, with 17% of views attributed to NBC.com and 4% to Hulu.com
“When something viral hits the social networks people clearly first go to YouTube to search and take it from there,” said Kaan Yigit, analyst with SRG.
In addition to informing public perception on the election, the sketches are increasing awareness of Hulu.com as a video destination. About 25% of online Americans are now aware of Hulu, up from 15% in July.

  1. ‘… indicating that viewing preferences for this type of content are shifting toward the computer.’
It doesn’t indicate that at all. A knee-jerk conclusion lacking any depth. For starters: a) SNL is on very late, on a Saturday night b) SNL is currently dreadful, with numbers down c) skits are political d) it’s election year e) skits are excellent e2) thus the skit will Play in Peoria f) what other comedic bits are there to watch currently?

  2. Maybe the statistics are also skewed by the fact that very few people outside of the US are directly watching US TV, whilst their web site is accessible *globally* 24 hours per day… and links to those website-based videos are being passed on to others by email, and through social media channels, by tens of thousands of people, daily.

  3. This content also has repeat viewing value. Not sure if the stat takes into consideration viewers who saw both. I know I have watched it 3-4 times. Very chuckley.

  4. The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  5. Sharron Angle warns of Significant Muslim danger inside the The country, I do think she may mean Obama!!!

  6. If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
