Video: Chernin on the Challenges of Innovation

Oct 20, 2008  •  Post A Comment

News Corp. President and Chief Operating Officer Peter Chernin discussed the evolving roles of old media and new media during an exclusive interview with TelevisionWeek Publisher and Editorial Director Chuck Ross at TVWeek’s Innovation360 conference, held last week in New York. He expressed empathy for the creative community despite a stalemate in talks between studios and the Screen Actors Guild, but hinted that any further movement is unlikely unless SAG softens its position. He also described how a consolidated media giant such as News Corp. might best navigate the new media landscape by embracing the “big brands” of hit movies and TV shows and, with advertisers on board, guiding the distribution of those key properties among both traditional outlets and digital platforms.

  1. Rupert Murdoch & Peter Chernin took the sinking “London Sun” UK tabloid & turned it into the world’s biggest newspaper. CableTV ‘star’ Ugly George politely asked HOW they did it; pointedly asking whether it was Hi-Brow Journalism that sparked readership or was it the naked Page 3 girls…COO Chernin demurred, saying there are NO PLANS to put naked women daily in the New York Post. The audience was greatly relieved to hear this…
