Brightcove Trims Web-Video Options

Online video provider Brightcove is ditching the free version of the service that it has offered for the last two years, the company announced Monday.
Brightcove will shut down its so-called “Brightcove Network” on Dec. 17. The free version has been supported by advertising sold by third party advertising networks, but has generated less than one percent of the company’s revenue, Brightcove said.
The company will focus on its platform business, which refers to the Brightcove technology that big media customers use to host and deliver video. Last month, Brightcove released a new version of that platform that’s used by networks such as Lifetime and Showtime.
Customers that had been using the free version will either need to upgrade to a paying version or host their videos elsewhere.

  1. This really sucks, since I have been happily using Brightcove’s video player for my web site. Unless they have an option I don’t see, the paid version doesn’t make sense for a smaller site like mine.

  2. This is too bad. We were considering rolling out a site using the free player and then ramping up to the paid one. Oh well, hopefully after a closer look, it will still look good. Actually comparing the player to the JWPlayer.

  3. This is exactly what happened to us with their pay-media option.
    We decided to build out our own platform because we could not be bothered dealing with the rug being pulled out from us again.
    It’s looking like an even better decision – given the current financial climate and the burn rate of most of the video platforms.
    That said if I did have to go with one – blip.tv would be my choice.
