USA Network’s “Monk” will solve his last case next year, as the award-winning series will end at the close of its eighth, 16-episode season, the network announced today.
The final season is scheduled to begin airing in the summer of 2009.
“We want to build to a spectacular conclusion for this wonderful show. By many measures, ‘Monk’ is the most successful series in the history of basic-cable television, and it was certainly the original tentpole of our ‘Character’ brand,” said Jeff Wachtel, executive vice president of original programming with USA Network/co-head of original content with Universal Cable Productions.
“Our fans have been extremely dedicated, and season eight should prove to be a very satisfying reward,” he said.
The show hit series ratings highs in February with its largest audience of adults in the 18- to 49-year-old demographic (2.98 million) and total viewers with 7.55 million.
“Monk” star Tony Shalhoub has been nominated for the Emmys’ lead actor in a comedy series for six consecutive years, winning in 2003, 2005 and 2006.
Executive producers of “Monk” are David Hoberman, Andy Breckman, Tony Shalhoub, Randy Zisk and Tom Scharpling. David Breckman and Jack Bernstein are co-executive producers. The series is from Universal Cable Productions in association with Mandeville Films and ABC Studios.

  1. It jumped the skark several seasons ago, the mysteries now needing someone only smarter than a fifth grader to solve. Love the character, hate what the show’s become.

  2. scotsmanskilt you are a tool. The show isn’t about complicated mysteries. It is about the characters, and I for one will sorely miss this wonderful and quirky show.

  3. Scotsmanskilt.. Are you serious.. In no way has the show “jump the shark.”
    And I agree with Superdollar.

  4. Yes I agree that Monk is a character driven show. The plots are only incidental to the wonderful characters these actors have given life to.
I will miss this show and the quirky turns of the mind that Monk has taken us through.

  5. Monk HAS NOT jumped the shark. I confess, I almost thought that it had for one or two episodes, (Lotto Fever and Falls in Love) but I can see now that it is still the same Monk. In fact, I think some of the best episodes are in the seventh season.

  6. During the seasons, knowing that a new Monk episode would air every Friday night would give me relief from a hectic work week. It would be hard-pressed to find someone better than Tony Shalhoub to play the part of this o.c.d. detective. Like so many other dedicated viewers, I miss Stanley Kamel and I think that the rest of the cast members are great. My wife and I have all of the released seasons on dvd and look forward to the next one, too.
This show will be greatly missed but it will live on with us long after the last episode has been aired. You’re awesome, Monk, and I only wish the tenure could have been longer.

  7. As much as I love this show, it hasn’t been the same since the Writer’s Strike, and I’m relieved that it’s being put down. I only hope this final season will be better than the last one. Mybe the finale could be multi-parted like the sixth season finale?

  8. I love Monk and I’m so sad the show is ending! I wish it could have ended at season 10 .. a nice, round number. =]

  9. Jane…LOL. I ABSOLUTELY love the show. I just started watching the reruns last year & was amazed @ what I had been missing. Made sure I watched the marathons, rented dvds, woke up early, etc. to c all of the episodes. Was surprised at how touching many of the episodes were (e.g. “this is me turning off your machine…& this is my wife Trudy, the woman u killed, turning it back on.”, him playing w/the little boy he wanted 2 adopt, etc.)Like so many, I looked 4ward 2 more episodes. So sad 2 c it end.

  10. I just love watching Natalie walk around in skirts and heels…the woman has great legs.

  11. This show always, “made me LOL, outloud.” I agree with Jane, why can;t they end on a nice even number?

  12. I love the show it made my week, couldnt wait till friday. Why would anyone want to end a show that so many people watched…someone isnt to smart..

  13. I am going to miss this program. I hope they answer the question of why his wife was killed.

  14. Why are they bringing this show to an end? Very confused.

  15. Say it aint so 🙁

  19. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
