Nielsen acquired the 50% share of the North American television ratings service it didn’t already own from WPP Group in exchange for two media research units and its minority stake in a third media research firm, Nielsen said in a statement Tuesday.
When the transaction closes by the end of the year, Nielsen will own all of AGBNielsen Media Research, which in addition to the North American TV ratings service measures radio, online and mobile device audiences.
In return, advertising firm parent WPP will get media-rate data firm SRDS, media planning service PERQ/HCI and Nielsen’s 11% share in three media services units that are majority-owned by Brazil-based IBOPE Group, Nielsen said. WPP owns 31% of IBOPE.
