Plasma Screens Continue to Gain Market Share

Nov 6, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Plasma screen shipments globally continue to surge in the third quarter, reaching their second highest quarterly total ever, as low pricing and increased availability of high-definition content boosted shipments, a new report said.
Plasma panel shipments grew 18% in the third quarter of 2008 versus the previous quarter, while year-to-year the total jumped 37% to 4.2 million units. That was 6% higher than expected, research firm DisplaySearch reported.
Fifty-inch-screen shipments rose from 26% to 29% of all units, a new record. The most popular screen size continued to be 42-inch screens, accounting for 49% of all units. It was the first quarter that 42-inch screens grabbed less than 50% of the market.
Developing markets are helping boost shipments of 32-inch plasma screens, but the high-definition share of 32-inch screens is dwindling due to pricing cuts on larger screens, making them more attractive than their smaller siblings.
LCD made inroads in the 32-inch display market.
“The HD share of 32-inch plasma panel shipments declined, falling from 37% to 23% of units, as 32-inch LCD panel prices declined rapidly in Q3 2008, thereby reducing the attractive pricing advantage plasma enjoyed in the 32-inch TV category,” Paul Gagnon, DisplaySearch director of North America TV market research, said in the report.
“In addition, aggressively lower retail prices at the end of Q3 ’08 for 42-inch and 50-inch HD plasma TVs are leading to a surge in demand for these models worldwide, especially in North America, and pushing overall plasma panel shipments sharply higher,” he said.

  1. iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  2. Keep focusing on your blog. I love how we can all express our feelings. This is an extremely nice blog here 🙂

  3. I love the expression. Everyone needs to express there own opinion and feel free to hear others. Keep it up 🙂
