Syndication Stunts Aim to Leverage Interest in Election

Nov 2, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Election Day won’t just be a ratings boon for news programming; several syndicators are taking advantage of the occasion to provide a launching pad for their November sweeps fare.
CBS Television Distribution’s “The Oprah Winfrey Show” is holding a two-day live event Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday, Election Day, cast members from “Saturday Night Live” and “The View” will hash out their voting viewpoints on the talk show; the following day, the show will feature political commentators and interviews with voters across the nation.
NBC Universal Television Distribution’s “Maury” will offer viewers the chance to vote on Tuesday— not for president, but on whether the show’s guests are male or female in an Election Day episode featuring transgendered guests.

'Wheel of Fortune's' Pat Sajak and Vanna White

A-L-O-H-A Pat Sajak and Vanna White bring “Wheel of Fortune” back to Hawaii in November.

“This is probably the most important election in our country’s history … not that the one with Barack Obama and John McCain doesn’t count,” host Maury Povich said in a statement. “Our goal, after a very long and tough presidential campaign, is just to have a little fun with our studio audience and viewers at home.”
NBCU’s “Access Hollywood” will be following P. Diddy, Joy Behar and Joan Rivers to the polls on Election Day.
On Election Day, Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” will feature as guest CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, who will discuss with Ms. DeGeneres the importance of voting.
Aside from the early focus on Election Day, the November sweeps, which began Oct. 30 and run through Nov. 26, will bring theme weeks and guest stars to several shows.
Debmar-Mercury’s “Trivial Pursuit: America Plays” starts “Brady Week” Nov. 10, with Christopher Knight (Peter Brady) playing host to Barry Williams, Mike Lookinland, Eve Plumb and Susan Olsen (aka Greg, Bobby, Jan and Cindy Brady). “Family Feud” brings in the impersonators for “Celebrity Lookalikes Week” starting Nov. 3.
Twentieth Television’s “Cristina’s Court” settles the score Nov. 3 between Janice Dickinson and “Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency” model Brian Kehoe, as Mr. Kehoe said his career was tarnished after Ms. Dickinson allegedly called him an alcoholic. Also for Twentieth, “The Morning Show With Mike and Juliet” welcomes TV icons such as Florence Henderson and Donny and Marie Osmond to talk about television classics in November.
CBS’ “Wheel of Fortune” heads to Hawaii for the month of November, while “Jeopardy!” kicks off its Teen Tournament Nov. 10. “The Rachael Ray Show” is giving 50 couples whose ceremonies were blown away by Hurricane Ike in September a wedding do-over. The episode is slated for late November.
WB’s “The Bonnie Hunt Show” will welcome Howie Mandel, Tony Hawk and Tom Bergeron for sweeps and “The Tyra Banks Show” hosts the cast of “Twilight” Nov. 25. The “Twilight” cast also makes an appearance on Warner Bros. “Extra” on Nov. 11. NBCU’s “Deal or No Deal” is having a costumed week for the first week of November.
