Women in Television: Bonnie Hammer

Nov 16, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Who: Bonnie Hammer, president, Cable Entertainment and Cable Studios, NBC Universal

Women in TV

Why: USA Network is sitting pretty as cable’s most-watched network and Sci Fi Channel is thriving. Ms. Hammer, who oversees them both, modestly chalks it up to luck.

“We’ve been on a very good roll. I have a great team and I think we’re smartly strategic in what we’ve done over the past couple of years. It looks like we’re going to have another really solid win across all demos,” Ms. Hammer said.

After being No. 1 two years in a row, Ms. Hammer and her team needed new worlds to conquer, so she set a new goal: Let’s beat a broadcast network. Lo and behold, USA topped The CW for the broadcast season.

What: As part of Ms. Hammer’s promotion to president of cable entertainment and cable studios this year, she was put in charge of NBC Universal’s cable program development. The studio also will be developing content designed for the Web. If those Web series prove popular, they could trade up to one of the networks, she said.

Will Ms. Hammer herself be trading up? Amid the personnel rumors swirling at NBC Universal, Ms. Hammer’s name is in the wind. But she throws cold water on any such speculation. “Those rumors have been going on since the day I was born. Ignore them,” she said. “I’m very happy doing what I’m doing.”
